Dagen held up a hand. “I told the council that if I did not return within the hour that they should capture Bree. I had a feeling you’d react like this. You always have been wild and hot-headed.”

Rafe came to a sudden stop, his heart pounding. “Stay away from her.”

“I’m afraid I can’t do that,” he said with an easy smile. “Stop her from trying to free Taveon, and I’ll leave her alone. It’s your choice, Rafferty.”

“And how am I supposed to do that from here?” Rafe threw up his hands, motioning toward the barracks behind them. “You made me leave the castle.”

Of course, Rafferty would do no such thing, even if he did have the freedom to roam the castle halls. One thing had become extremely clear to him during this conversation. Dagen could not continue to rule this realm. He needed to be removed from the throne just as hastily as Taveon had been. And the rightful ruler needed his crown again.

Rafe’s gut twisted. Dagen had been right about one thing, of course. The court would never accept Taveon now that they knew the truth about him. Still, there had to be something they could do. Anything was better than letting Dagen sit on that damn throne.

“I suppose I’ll have to allow you to return. Just long enough for you to discuss this with Bree.”

Rafe gave the lord a vicious smile. “As you wish, Lord Dagen. I’ll have that chat with Bree.”
