BREE

The demons set up camp when the party reached the fields outside of Munlin. Surprised they’d stopped, Bree peered through the bars, hoping for some kind of sign that could tell them what the enemy had planned. Her captors bustled about, starting a fire, bickering about food, and grumbling about being attached to guard duty.

“Want to be back at that castle doing something fun,” one of them barked at the other.

“Something fun? You mean, sitting around in that damn field, not doing a damn thing?” the other said with an eye roll. “At least we get to see what all the fuss is about with that one.”

They both turned toward Bree and Taveon, but she knew who they were talking about. None of this had anything to do with her. Just Taveon and whatever his father, the Grand Master, had planned for him.

Bree settled back onto the cage floor and sighed. “Looks like we’re stopping for at least a little while.”

A muscle in Taveon’s jaw ticked. “Unfortunately, all that does is drag this whole thing out. I’d rather just go ahead and get this over with.”

“Taveon.” She leaned forward, wrapping a hand around his knee. His eyes softened from her touch, but the haunted look on his face didn’t vanish entirely. “Please don’t think that way. We still have some hope of getting out of this.”

“Do we?”

“Yes. I have an idea.”

Steeling herself, Bree rose to a crouch and started banging her hands against the bars. “Hey! I have a problem in here!”

One of the demons that had been chatting about Taveon wandered over on his clawed feet. “What’s all this shouting about?”

“I need to go to the bathroom,” Bree said.

“What the fuck is a bathroom?”

Ah, right. Demons likely didn’t have baths, and even if they did, she doubted they called their toilet room the same thing human Americans did. So, she tried again. “The privy. I need to pee.”

The demon rolled his eyes. “Do it in there.”

“Well, I have to do the other one as well.”

“What other one?”

She sighed. This wasn’t going as she’d planned. “Are you really not going to let me relieve myself? I realize I’m your prisoner, but the other guards have let me out. If you’re not going to do it, then bring one of them over.”

He just laughed. “Enjoy your night. Hope it smells bad enough to haunt your dreams.”

When the demon wandered back over to the fire, Bree’s jaw dropped. She really hadn’t expected that to happen. Every word she’d said was the truth. The other guards had let her out a few times, though they’d grumbled when they’d done so. This one...well, he just didn’t give a shit.

“Your plan going well?” Taveon asked with a flat voice.

“Wonderful.” Sighing, she plopped back down.

“What did you think you’d do, even if he did let you out of here? The other guards didn’t even turn their back on you the previous times.”

“Yes, I’m well aware,” she said dryly. “I thought maybe they’d be less clingy since we’re in a camp now. Maybe I’d steal their keys or shove my knee into their balls. I don’t know.”

“Well, I appreciate you trying, but I have to admit, I’m glad they turned you down. If you’d actually kneed one of them in the balls, I’m afraid they would have...well, I won’t say it out loud.”

She could read his thoughts all the same. He thought they’d chop her head off.

Bree shivered.

“You cold?” Taveon asked.
