Georgina wrapped her legs tightly around him.

Two books fell from the bookcase, hit Leo on the shoulder, then thudded on the rug. The landscape of the Hudson she so loved tilted wildly from its place on the wall.

“I crossed the ocean for you.” He slammed into her. “I hate the fucking ocean. I was sick for days.” Another thrust. “My heart broken even longer.”

“I’m sorry.” A tear rolled down her cheek as the world broke apart around them. It wasn’t for Leo suffering onboard a ship, though that was terrible because she knew how much the water frightened him. But for everything else. Georgina urged him on with every filthy word she’d ever learned as her pleasure overtook her. It was like being in the midst of a violent storm, the winds and rain taking away her breath as her body could do no more than be buffeted by the gale.

“Georgie.” Her name came roaring from him as he pounded into her once more, his big body shuddering against hers.

Georgina’s body went limp with a small cry, but Leo caught her as they tumbled to the floor in a tangle of skirts and limbs. The only sound was the rough, uneven cadence of air around them as they both struggled to breathe.

She wrapped her arms around his neck, pressing her forehead against his chest with a sob.

Leo gently tucked a tendril of her hair behind her ear. “Shush. You never cry.” He kissed away a tear.

“I was so frightened, Leo,” she choked out as the tears flowed down her cheeks. “I—” Georgina clung to him, everything she’d gone through flooding to the surface. Her fingers curled into his coat. He had to understand she hadn’t thought she had a choice. She hadn’t known how much he cared for her, not until it was too late. “I’m sorry.”

“Shh. I know.” He pressed a kiss to her temple. “Don’t cry, love.”

A sharp knock sounded at the door. “Mrs. Masterson. Are you well? I thought I heard a noise.”

It was Emily, her downstairs maid, who was probably terrified from the sounds coming from Georgina’s parlor.

“I knocked over a lamp, Emily. Nothing more. I believe I’ll go upstairs and lie down.”

Silence for a moment. “Very good, ma’am.”

What now? Would he leave her here in a sated pile on the floor while he adjusted his clothing and left? She couldn’t force her fingers to leave his coat. There was so much—maybe too much—that needed to be resolved.

Carefully, he disentangled himself from her and stood. Adjusted his clothing.

Georgina stayed where she was, looking down at her rumpled dress. Her sprawled legs.

Leo took her hand and pulled her up before swinging her into his arms. He nuzzled the side of her neck as he carried her out of the room and in the direction of the stairs.

Georgina didn’t protest; in fact, her heart sobbed and reached for him. She clung to Leo until he muttered under his breath that she was cutting off his air.

Thankfully, Emily had fled the general area. No one else was about. Could the men Ben had hired to watch her home see Leo carrying her? The last thing she needed was her cousin bursting in with a pistol in his hand.

“Where?” Leo started up the staircase. He pressed a quick kiss to her cheek. “Your room, Georgie. Where is it?”
