I pulleddown on the black dress, trying to cover more of my thighs, but it was impossible. This thing was short and too damn tight. The worst part was that it was a great dress for a night out; I was just upset it had to be like this.

Wishing I could be anywhere but here, I grabbed a glass from the silver tray on the low table among the leather couches and turned to the metal railing. I drank a sip of the champagne and looked down at the throng of supernaturals dancing to the beat of the music.

Some were easy to identify. Fae with their pointy ears, goblins with their short height and greenish skin … but most, it was hard to guess. I saw a happy group of young women dancing together, a couple of males in their midst, and I tried making out what they could be. Vampires? Witches? Warlocks? Wolf shifters? I didn’t know.

But they all seemed happy, like they wanted to be here with their friends or mates, or whatever … having a good time.

My situation was entirely different.

I brought my glass to my lips and paused. No, drinking wasn’t a good idea. I couldn’t get drunk while out with Conri. He had respected certain boundaries so far. I wanted to make sure he would continue to do so.

I dropped the glass back on the table and stole a look at him.

He promptly smiled at me, raising his glass at me.

I frowned, looking from him to the two men seated with him—I couldn’t be sure, but I thought they were wolf shifters, from one of the packs around the Nightshade. I bet if Lucille was in my place, she would have known who they were, but since I had never been invited to any pack event, I didn’t know anyone’s faces.

Did they know what was happening to us? To my pack? Did they care? Or were they plotting with Conri to conquer more packs?

Disgust rolled in my stomach.

I let out a long breath and glanced to the dance floor again, trying to distract myself with other thoughts. Like the fact that I was in New York City! I had read about the city in books, but I never thought that one day I would be here. Honestly, though, it barely counted. Conri had chartered a private jet to fly us from Prince Albert to New York. We arrived at a small airport where a limousine waited for us. I had seen a little of the city from the windows, and I even recognized Times Square and Broadway Avenue.

I just wished there was something—

An idea struck me as fast and hard as lightning.

On the way here, Conri had mentioned that humans who knew about our world were able to enter the club, but it was rare. Which meant, all these people dancing, drinking, and laughing were supernaturals.

Someone here could help me.

But who? And why?

Why would a stranger help me?

I hated the thought of working with witches, since all of my pack’s problems started with them, but who better to help me? To concoct a potion, a poison I could slip into Conri’s drink, into his gang’s drinks? I didn’t have any money on me, but the alpha and the betas had been rich. There was money in my pack. If only I found a witch willing to make a blood pact with me. I could promise to pay her once Conri and his gang were dead.

It was risky. It was crazy. It was rushed.

But this was my only opportunity. When would Conri let me out again? In another year? No, I didn’t have time to think this through and come up with a better plan.

It was now or never.

Inhaling deeply, I turned to the VIP area’s exit.

Promptly, Phell and Gunner stepped in my way.

“I’m going to the restroom,” I told them. I pointed to the end of the hallway that connected all the VIP booths and areas. There, right beside the stairs leading down, was the women's restroom.

Gunner went to Conri and whispered in his ear. Conri glanced at me, then nodded. He gestured to the demons, probably telling them to stay glued to my ass.

The first clue that I hadn’t thought this plan through.

It didn’t matter. I still had to try.

I walked out of the VIP area, my stomach tight, my heart speeding up. This was nuts, this was insane, and yet I couldn’t stop myself. It felt like a shot of adrenaline in my veins.
