I entered the restroom and the two demons trailing me waited outside. I went to the mirror and looked at my face. My blue eyes gave away my anxiety, my excitement, and my fear. I schooled my expression into a scowl.

To pass the time, I reapplied the red lipstick over my lips and smoothed down my dress, checking to see if I hadn’t gotten it dirty or smudged anywhere. The two occupied stalls opened, the women washed their hands and left. Then another one came in.

All right, it was time.

Slowly, I opened the door and spied out. Phell and Gunner were a handful of feet away from the door, standing like statues along the wall.

Two women more came in and I stepped back to let them pass. The first woman washed her hands. She would leave. I needed a plan.

I smiled at her. “I like your hair.”

She looked at me through the mirror. “Thanks.” The purple streaks shimmered and changed into red ones.

“That’s amazing.”

“It’s my thing.”

“You’re a witch?” What were the odds I would find one in here? Was I that lucky?

“No, I’m a fae.” She brushed her hair back and around her ears. Oh, now I saw it.

“Cool. What kind?”

“Blaze fae. My hair is actually a burnt orange, but I like playing with glamours.”

“That sounds like fun.”

The other two women exited the stalls and washed their hands. I opened my mouth, ready to ask them if they were witches, but that felt way too creepy. However, they saved me the trouble when one of them smiled at her reflection in the mirror, showing off her fangs.

“Are you all friends?” I asked, knowing the answer.

One of the vampires shook her head. They headed to the exit. I moved with them. The fae moved too. I kept my voice low but asked other stupid questions, making them talk to me, while we all walked out the bathroom together. I somehow was able to keep myself among the three of them, and I pretended I was fixing something on my dress’s hem so I could keep my head low.

I needed three seconds.

The staircase opened at my feet and I dashed down, not even saying bye to the three females I had used to my advantage. Hopefully, the demons hadn’t seen me and thought I was still in the restroom.

At the bottom of the stairs, I paused for a second and took a deep breath.

So this was what freedom smelled like?

I almost laughed since all I smelled was cheap perfume, sweat, and booze.

Despite my brief moment of respite, I knew this freedom wouldn’t last long. The demons would realize I was taking too long in the restroom and they would come after me.

I didn’t have much time.

I had read enough fiction books about the human world and the ones who depicted nightclubs sometimes mentioned someone in the corner or along the back walls selling drugs. I doubted it would be much different here—a witch selling potions for supernaturals who were willing to pay for a good brew or spell that enhanced their experience.

I weaved among the round tables on this side of the club, my head darting around, looking for someone who fit the bill. I got closer to the back wall where low couches were and—

Bingo.

A woman sat on one of the couches, several small vials with colorful liquid in front of her. A man seated beside her got a blue vial, paid her some handsome amount of cash, and left.

I sat in his vacated spot.

“What are you looking for, dearie?”
