Keeva and Lorie approached me, one on either side of me.

“I don’t think she knows,” Lorie said to Keeva.

Keeva leaned closer, almost over me. “I think you’re right.”

By the moon …

With the frying pan and my almost-burnt eggs, I went back to the island, and placed the eggs in two plates.

The two witches followed me.

“Aren’t you curious?” Lorie asked me. “It doesn’t matter. We’ll tell you either way.”

“We can sense something different about you, little wolf,” Keeva said, sounding proud of herself.

I frowned at her. Only Conri called me that and I hatedit. And now they were spewing lies to aggravate me.

They were succeeding.

“See, we don’t know what exactly, but I remember seeing you during the little girl’s birthday. You were hiding beside the infirmary building.” I sucked in a sharp breath. She had seen me there. “I sensed it back then.”

Keeva nodded. “True, a handful of us sensed it. The most powerful ones, of course.” She winked at me. “But you see, other problems arose and we forgot about that.”

“Until you came in last night.” Lorie’s eyes sparked with excitement. “Maybe that was why your family was demoted to omega?”

Say what? That got my attention, and I checked on the bacon while the two followed me wherever I turned.

“No.” Keeva shook a long index finger right at my face. “From what I heard, her family was demoted to omega long before she was born.”

“Oh, so maybe Franc didn’t know,” Lorie mused.

“No, not Franc, but Conri sure knows.”

“And that’s probably why he keeps you close.”

I stilled. The spatula in my hand snapped in two. “Stop spewing nonsense!”

Lorie’s eyes bulged, but she smiled wide. “You don’t believe us. Ask Conri. You know, we will ask him about it.”

“We’re very curious.” Keeva pointed her finger to my chest. “There’s something here. Like a faint, deep but ancient kind of magic. Something I had never encountered before.”

“Me neither.” Lorie picked up one of the bacon pieces from my plate and took a big bite of it. “Curious.”

“Interesting,” Keeva said.

Lorie nodded. “That too.”

Holy moon, I wouldn’t get this breakfast done. I would either grab a knife and slice their throats open, or I would throw the rest of this food over their heads. Either way, I would get in trouble and I was damn tired of that.

Pretending I wasn’t curious at all, I turned away from them. Breakfast be damned. I would starve if they continued in this house. Hopefully, they would leave and I would be able to cook. If not for me, then for Minsi. The girl had to eat.

I took two steps before Keeva wrapped her hand around my wrists, just above the shackles, and tugged me back to them. “Where do you think you’re going? We’re not done with you.”

I shoved her away from me, but froze when Lorie grabbed my chin in her hands, her long nails pressing against my skin. Her other hand was up and a sliver of black smoke swirled around her index finger.

Magic.

“I would behave, if I were you.” Lorie moved that finger closer to my chest. “If you don’t want to feel any pain.”
