“What are you doing?” I asked, trying to sound brave, but failing. “Why don’t you leave me alone?”

“We’re very friendly,” Keeva told me. “We love welcoming new witches into our coven, and we also love making friends. We thought you would want to be our friend too.”

“Especially because if we dig in, we can find out about the magic we’re sensing.” Lorie touched her finger to my chest. “Don’t you want to know what it is? What it means?”

Keeva clapped her hands twice. “We do.”

“You’re insane,” I rasped, moving my chin as little as I could. Lorie’s nails dug in a little more.

“What in the name of the underworld are you two doing?”

In half a second, Lorie and Keeva took their hands off me and faced an angry, red-faced Conri.

“Oh, we were just playing with your toy,” Lorie said. The magic around her finger was gone. “Isn’t that what you do with her?”

Conri’s arms shifted. His fingers elongated, turning into claws, and dark-gray fur covered his arms and shoulders. He glared at the demons standing watch at the corners of the kitchen.

“What the hell were you doing? Why didn’t you stop this nonsense?”

Phell let out a scoff. “She didn’t seem to be in any real danger, sir.”

Conri growled, showing off his half-turned fangs.

Boy, he was pissed.

He stalked to us. He glanced at the witches. “You don’t touch Raika, or the other girl, without my consent. Do you understand? If you do, our deal is over.”

The witches exchanged an I-told-you-so look, but nodded at him.

“You’re no fun, Conri,” Keeva complained.

“You’re not here to have fun,” he snapped. His fangs retracted, and slowly, the fur disappeared from his arms. “You’re here to work.” He pointed to the front door across the family room and the foyer. “Now go.”

The witches shot me an amused glance before flipping their hair and walking to the door like models on a runaway.

Once they were gone, Conri stared at Phell and said, “If the witches try anything else, you stop them. If you can’t stop them, call me. No one is to hurt Raika.”

“Yes, sir.”

Finally, Conri looked at me and let out a long breath. “Are you hurt?” I shook my head. “Good.” He gestured to the plates and food at the counter in front of me. “You can return to whatever you were doing.”

Without another glance at me, Conri walked away, taking most of his demons with him, except for Phell and the new one who had been assigned to me.

I stared at Conri’s back. Could Lorie and Keeva be right? Was there something different about me and that was why Conri kept me close, keeping me safe? Was that why he seemed concerned about me?

But it didn’t make sense.

Because there wasn’t anything different with me. I would have known if there was, right?

No, I wouldn’t allow the witches to play with me like this. They didn’t deserve my fear, my curiosity.

Taking a deep, calming breath and shaking those thoughts out of my head, I threw the cold food in the trash and started it all over. Despite my mood and my sudden lack of appetite, Minsi deserved a good breakfast.
