I ran at the witches. This time, I didn’t care if anyone heard me, and some demons did as I ran past them. They searched for the sound’s source but didn't find it.

The witches also noticed something was amiss right before I lunged at Lorie’s chest and buried my fangs into her throat. She fell, and by the time her body hit the ground, she was dead.

Keeva screamed and threw magic darts randomly. I dodged them all and rammed into her. She fell back as I felt the invisibility potion wearing off. She threw her hands out, trying to push me away, but in physical combat, I was a lot stronger than witches. I clamped my mouth around her neck. She writhed under me for a couple more seconds and then she stopped.

I looked up, and as expected, found all the demons surrounding me.

I couldn’t help but steal a glance to the center of the square—Raika was seated, her hands on the ground, her eyes wide, her face pale. She was fine. Being held captive, probably as a trap for me, but she was fine.

A tiny sliver of relief emerged in the middle of my rage, but I pushed it back. I would make the entire world burn down.

I snarled and advanced on the demons.

“Stop!” a voice carried through the square.

I stopped, not because the voice had commanded, but because the demons stepped back and parted, allowing Conri to walk closer.

“Ah, so you’re the one behind all of this,” Conri said, an amused grin on his lips. “Welcome home, Shane, former alpha heir.”

I shifted into my human form. “I’m still the alpha heir and soon I’ll be alpha.”

Conri’s eyebrows lifted. “Such confidence. It’s a shame that’s not enough.” Conri waved his hands at me.

The demons advanced on me. I barely had time to shift before they were on top of me.

“No!” Raika yelled.

I fought with all I had, clawing the chest of a demon, biting down on another’s leg, ramming into another, but there were too many, and their abilities as demons were unexpected.

One sent waves of shadows that obscured my surroundings, while other’s breath made me dizzy, and another’s scream sapped my energy.

Then, a handful of demons held me by my limbs—and the cuffs were clasped around my front legs. I shifted back into my human form, my strength sapped.

“Shane!” Raika called.

I groaned and pushed to my knees.

A pair of demons held my arms, and another fisted my hair and pulled my head up, so I could look at Conri.

“I’m curious about one thing,” Conri started. “The Nightmist witches were supposed to take you, torture you for a bit, and then kill you. How did you escape?”

I stared at him. He wouldn’t get an answer from me.

Conri chuckled. “Suit yourself.” He glanced at the demons behind me. “Take him to a classroom by himself.”

My turn to be amused. “What? Too afraid to kill me?”

“Oh, I will, but I think it would be best to prepare everything for that,” he said. “Wouldn’t it be something if your entire pack watched your death? Their last hope … dead. It’ll be quite the show.”

I jerked against the demons and a couple of them had trouble holding me back. If my energy wasn’t shit right now, I would have pushed to my feet and lunged at Conri. With or without shifting, I would kill him.

Conri turned to leave and I assessed the situation. Around me, the benches were broken, and Raika, now on her knees, was in some kind of prison. How long had she been there? For a couple of hours? Since yesterday? I didn’t want to think about it.

“I want to make a deal.”

Conri stopped. “I don’t think you’re in any shape to offer me anything.”

“What about the crystals?”
