“Exactly.”

“What’s the other thing?”

“The full moon. I can only activate the magic during the full moon.”

“The full moon is tomorrow,” Conri stated.

I pushed up on my elbows, dragging myself to a seated position. I wondered what Shane’s game was now. Was this another one of his lies? Or was he still trying to buy time for his friends?

Shane nodded. “I know.”

Conri tilted his head, considering it. “All right. We’ll wait until tomorrow evening. But be warned …” He stepped right to Shane’s door and stared into his eyes. “If this doesn’t work, I’ll kill Raika slowly and I’ll make you watch. Then, I’ll do the same with your sister.” A wicked smile spread over Conri’s lips. “I’ll do that to your entire pack, until no one is left. By then, you’ll be begging me to kill you, and you know what I’ll do? I’ll keep as my prisoner, alone, powerless, so you can always remember what you did to your pack.”

Shane stared back at Conri, serious and deadly. “I’m not lying.”

“Good.” Conri turned. He paused, looked down at me, waved his hand at me as if I was litter in his path. His demons grabbed my arms and dragged me inside the classroom again. They dropped me just beyond the door before locking it behind me. “I’ll be back tomorrow evening,” Conri said from the corridor.

I heard their footsteps retreating and then silence as they closed the shadow wall again.

“Raika?” Shane asked a minute later, his voice low, careful.

“Yes?” I rasped. Even speaking hurt my throat.

“I’m sorry. If I had known he would hurt you instead, I—“

“It’s okay, Shane,” I told him as I sat up. I was relieved Conri hadn’t hurt Shane, because that would have hurt me more than physical pain. “What now? You’re buying time? You think in less than twenty-four hours, your friends will be here?”

“Don’t worry,” he said, his voice low. “I’ve got a plan.”
