“How can we help?” Thea asked. She wore an elegant black gown, which reminded me of the Nightmist witches—always dressed up for a ball. She was beautiful and looked to be in her mid to late twenties.

“Hm.” I glanced at the battle next to us. With our allies, the demons fell fast. “I think … we should rescue my pack. Free them from the classrooms they are locked in.” I pointed to the school building.

Thea and Almae nodded and started toward the school. With automatic movements, I followed them, but Lavinia put her hand on my shoulder. “Shane might not have told you about the curse, so I won’t. I’ll let him explain the details to you, but when he’s like this, he’s not himself. After the fight is over, if he attacks our own, we’ll have to subdue him. I just wanted you to know. We won’t hurt him, but we have to stop him.”

I frowned. “He didn’t attack me.”

Her eyes rounded. “What?”

“Yeah. Before … he killed some demons then he came at me. I thought he would hurt me too, but he didn’t. He sniffed me then he freed me.” I showed her my bare wrists—the red bruises were still there and probably would be for a long time.

“So, he recognized you? That’s … great!” She grabbed my hand. “Come. You should be near him, then. When he turns on us, you can intervene.”

I let her pull me closer to the main square, though I had to confess, I wasn’t eager to try and calm down a feral wolf right now, even if it was my mate.

Shane grabbed a short demon with both his hands, and with a roar that made the hair on my arms stand on end, he pulled the demon apart, snapping his head off as if it was a bottle cap.

My stomach turned and a sliver of fear swirled in my chest.

Lavinia and I approached fray, where Shane turned to Conri again. The devil tried taking off, but the wolf shifters formed a blockade in front of him. Conri had been trying to get away, but no one was letting him.

A vampire with brown hair stepped closer to them. “No one interferes,” he said. “This is Shane’s kill.”

“What? You're not going to help Shane?” I asked Lavinia, worried.

“Killian knows Shane would have wanted to do this himself. It’s the only way for him to be alpha again.”

“I …” Honestly, I didn’t know anymore. It had been that way before, but when a half-demon, half-wolf became alpha, all of the rules seemed to change.

The remaining wolf shifters killed the last of the demons, then formed a wide circle around Shane and Conri.

Conri snarled at Shane and conjured his magic. Shadows covered the ground around Shane, like dense fog. With a snarl, Shane charged Conri. Conri met him halfway in a wide jump. The two clashed hard. Conri went for Shane’s throat, but Shane swiped his big claws down and scratched Conri’s snout, pushing him away.

Conri fell on all four, but didn’t retreat. He advanced again, trying to bite Shane, and Shane kept dodging the strikes and landing ones of his own.

Two strange wolves—one standing on two legs covered in shadows, and the other a half-demon—fighting for my pack. You didn’t see that every day.

Conri retreated as far as he could from Shane and turned, his eyes toward the full moon. The shadows on the ground rose, enveloping Shane.

I gasped and surged forward. Lavinia held my arm. “Don’t.”

“I can’t just stand here and watch. Someone needs to help him.” But as I said the words, I knew I couldn’t. Lavinia was right. If I interfered now, Shane would forfeit the fight, and Conri would continue being alpha.

I couldn’t allow that.

I swallowed my fear, pressed a hand to my stomach, and stayed put.

With a howl, Shane broke through the shadows, but not entirely. A bigger cloud of shadows swirled around him, weaving around his body, as if obeying his command.

Conri peeled his lips back in a snarl and covered his body in shadows as he lunged for Shane.

Movement and sounds coming from behind us caught my attention and I turned—I gasped as my pack clambered out of the school for the first time in a year! Tears filled my eyes. They all approached us, forming a wide arc around the improvised fighting circle. Among them, I saw Dom with a hand around Lucille’s waist, helping her stand. She had a bruise on her cheek and neck, but nothing too bad.

Roman was right behind them, along with Jay, and Vianna and the pups. Serge kept his distance with two other older wolves.

Rue and Tyren accompanied Minsi as she ran for me, her eyes huge, her hands trembling. Minsi crashed into me and wrapped her arms around me. I embraced her tight. Rue stopped by my right and patted my shoulder.

To my left, Tyren frowned and watched the fight. “What’s going on?”
