Shit. “The tall one? That’s Shane.”

“What?” Tyren asked, his voice low, incredulous.

Shane grabbed Conri with both his claws and moved his big head toward Conri’s throat, but the devil slinked away like a slippery eel.

Using his demon magic, Conri sent a wave of shadows toward Shane. But in this form, the shadows were Shane’s friend. He stood tall and took the brunt of the wave—and from the deep breath he took, I could say he even absorbed some of it.

Conri continued sending hits at Shane—bolts, shards, anything he could think of—but Shane paused slightly each time one of the strikes hit him.

Always cheating, Conri turned and pushed through the crowd. The vampires around the ring didn’t miss a beat. They pushed Conri back to the fight.

Without a choice, Conri turned back to Shane.

Suddenly, the shadows on the ground grew and formed a giant shadow wall around the ring. Before it closed, tendrils of shadow reached toward me. I stepped back and pushed Minsi to Rue. I fought the shadows, but they wrapped around my arms and legs and pulled at me. Tyren and Lavinia tried holding on to me but there was no use. The shadows swallowed me.

Three seconds of pure darkness, in which panic bloomed in my chest, but then it retreated.

I inhaled a sharp breath.

I was in the shadow ring with Shane and Conri.

Conri snarled at me as if poised to attack. Adrenaline and rage surged within me. I took off the jacket Almae gave me and shifted into my wolf, ready to attack him instead.

My mistake.

The moment I shifted, I heard someone else’s voice in my mind.

Stop, Conri commanded.

My muscles froze. I could barely widen my eyes as realization hit me.

Conri was the alpha. I had never forgotten that, even though I had wanted to, but I had forgotten how the alpha could command his wolves—Conri rarely used that on me—and how he could communicate through a mind link when shifted.

That I had little experience with.

Shit.

But … what about Shane? I had seen Conri’s command working on Shane before, long ago, but it wasn’t working now? Not while he was this monstrous shadow wolf?

Hesitating, Shane glanced from Conri to me and back to Conri. He let out a short snarl and charged Conri.

Kill him, Conri said in my mind.

A command.

My blood chilled as I felt the magic of the words surging, acting. My muscles moved and I turned to Shane.

Bastard, I said.

Conri laughed. This will be fun.

Conri didn’t move as Shane ran at him because he knew he didn’t have to. I rammed into Shane’s side. He hadn’t expected my strike and easily lost his balance. We tumbled to the ground, but he quickly shot up and bared his teeth at me.

Fear and despair gripped my chest, but I couldn’t stop it. I wasn’t in control of my body. I ran at him again, teeth snapping.

Stop this, I called to Conri.

The devil just laughed, the sound ringing in my head.
