Making me sick.

My eyes welled with tears as I jumped at Shane again. I wasn’t sure what was going on through his mind. If he still recognized me, if he thought I was a nuisance … but he didn’t stop me. He blocked my advances, he pushed me away, but he didn’t strike me as hard as he could.

He didn’t want to hurt me.

And I couldn’t not hurt him.

Shane, I whispered, trying to reach his own mind. If you’re listening, I can’t control myself. You have to stop me.

There was no acknowledgment in his dark face, in his red eyes.

Even though he deflected each of my hits, I kept on going after him time and time again, tirelessly, stubbornly.

Finish him!Conri shouted in my mind.

I winced at the command.

But I couldn’t help myself.

I aimed right and jumped, my mouth open so I could close it around Shane’s neck.

Shane’s arm swiped up and slapped as if I was a fly hovering around his head. I went flying through the air, then skidded across the ground, my body screaming at me as pain assaulted every inch of me.

Too tired and hurt, I lost the grip on my wolf and shifted back into my human form.

Shane loomed over me, his enraged eyes fixed on me, his claws turned to me, his fangs bared, rabid drool gathered at the corners of his mouth.

This was it.

My mate would kill me.

I just hoped this didn’t kill him later.

“It’s okay,” I whispered before closing my eyes.

A moment later, Shane’s snout pressed against my cheek. I opened my eyes wide, but didn’t dare to move.

In a flash, Shane spun and charged Conri.

I stared, in shock.

Conri was probably yelling at me to kill Shane, but in my human form, I couldn’t hear the mental link. Like this, I didn’t feel the urge anymore.

I frowned, but didn’t have time to think about it. I watched as Shane knocked Conri off his feet. The two of them tumbled to the hard ground and rolled around each other, while claws swiped and teeth snapped.

Confused if I should shift back and risk having Conri in my mind again, I kept my eyes peeled, looking for an opening regardless. If one presented itself, I would act. If I was fast enough, Conri’s command wouldn’t get to me in time.

But the two didn’t stop moving.

I approached them and a moment later, they rolled over a flowerbed and its low metal fence. Conri whined and the two of them separated. They stood up, Shane on two legs, Conri on four, and faced each other again.

Shadows surged from beside Conri and advanced through the ring. Shane stepped right over it, as if it were smoke and it barely tickled his nose. He lunged at Conri as I braced myself for the wave as it quickly came at me and I had nowhere to go.

On instinct, I raised my hands like I had done before and the shadows faded into the air before connecting with me.

What?

I didn’t waste time pondering about that. I ran toward Shane and Conri, who were at it again. Both of them tangled together, trying to hit and bite the other.
