He let out a deep breath as he rose from the table. “Well, ‘king’, I think it’s time for this knight to leave.”

“Could you check my car for bugs?” I asked, walking him to the door.

Nate blinked as his head snapped up. “Sure. You think you’re being bugged because of what Reggie said?”

“You caught that too, huh?”

He nodded. “I think he automatically thought you were going to have a problem with the trafficking business. But I wouldn’t put bugging your car beneath him. I’ll check yours and mine. Joe is going to be one of your bodyguards.”

“You trust him?”

“With my life. He’s quick. He’s smart.” Nate opened the door. “Besides, I wouldn’t have suggested him if I didn’t trust him.”

The way my eyebrow raised at the word “smart” made Nate laugh.

“No really. He is… smart, in his own way. And he’s loyal.”

“Oh-kay.” I rolled my eyes. “Do you have anyone else?”

“Big Bob volunteered to be your other guy.”

“Big Bob?” I scoffed. “The guy from the warehouse with the girls?”

Nate nodded. “Yeah. He was with Joe when I was talking to him about it, and he volunteered. I told him I would run it by you.”

“I don’t know.” I shook my head, considering. “What do you know about him?”

“Big Bob was a marksman in the military and, from what I hear, he hasn’t lost it.” Nate leaned on the door facing, but kept the door closed. “He’s a good guy and he’s loyal to whoever is sitting at the top.”

“You trust him?” I folded my arms across his chest.

Nate bit his lip. “I trust him to protect the Boss.”

“Got it. So as long as I’m the Boss, I should be safe.”

“Exactly.”

I took a moment to think. Joe, I didn’t mind. But Big Bob, I don’t know. He knew my mother. Maybe that was why he volunteered. “Okay. Joe and Big Bob.”

“Joe and Big Bob.”

I opened the door, tapping my finger lightly on the doorhandle. “Nate, thanks for everything.”

“What are you thinking about?” he asked. I looked up and he pointed at my finger. “You tap things when you’re thinking.”

I smiled. “You’re observant. Aren’t you?”

Nate laughed. “Hey, I can notice things too.”

“Well, look at you!” I opened the door a bit wider. “Do you know, or could you find out where Lucian Sky will be tomorrow night?”

Nate shook his head as a slow smile spread across his lips. “Tomorrow night, no. But I know where he is now.”
