Chapter 13

Addie

Was my plan stupid? Probably. Did Nate seem uneasy about going along with it? Very. Did he still call Joe and Big Bob and tell them to meet us outside of the Sky family restaurant called Skye? Yes, he did. They arrived a few minutes after us, heavily armed. There was no one outside the place but the lights were still on.

“You sure he’s here?” I looked around, checking out the place but couldn’t see anyone.

“Yeah. I’ve been keeping track of him and some others since I got out of the hospital.” Nate stretched his neck out and then nodded toward the dark restaurant. “Trust me. He is in there with his son and two of his cousins.”

“Okay.” He opened my door and extended his hand. I took it, letting him help me out as Big Bob and Joe flanked us. “Thanks for coming out, you two.”

The two men looked at each other and then back at me.

“Of course,” Big Bob said, a crease forming between his eyes. “What, exactly, is the plan? We are going in shooting, or are we are going to need more guys?”

“No, I don’t think it will come to that.” I bit my lower lip. “I just want to have a conversation with Lucian. That’s it. No shooting.”

“Okay. He might talk to you.” Big Bob nodded.

“You think.” I smirked, arching an eyebrow.

“He knew your mom and you look just like her. I’m not saying you could get over on him but he—”

“Might hear me out?”

Big Bob nodded.

I took a deep breath. It wasn’t much but it made me feel a little better. “Okay.”

Nate nodded and Joe tried the door. It was unlocked so we walked in. Inside, it was warm, and the scent of garlic and onions hung in the air, mixing with something sweet.

“Hold it!”

I stopped. Big Bob and Joe stood in front of me while Nate stood to my left. All of us held up our hands. There was a table full of men across the room. When the Sky bodyguard, a tall man with a thick black beard and heavily tattooed arms yelled out, one of the men at the table stood up.

“The man standing up is Lucian,” Nate said, his voice low.

Lucian Sky was tall and good looking, like my father. His dark hair was slicked back, and a crescent shaped scar hugged the side of his face.

“Wait.” He stepped away from the table and started toward us. I stepped between Joe and Big Bob and met him in the middle of the room.

“I didn’t mean to disturb your dinner,” I said, looking him straight in the eye.

He gazed at me like he was looking for something. Like he was looking at something or someone else. Then he shook his head as if he were trying to snap out of a dream. “You disturbed nothing. Our business was done. Just a bunch of old farts drinking and reminiscing about some old shit.”

I smiled. He wasn’t like I had imagined him. He seemed nice but then again so did Eli and my father. His voice was warm and kind. Friendly.

“I heard you were shot but I see you’re doing well.” He looked me over. “I’m glad to see you’re okay.”

My hand immediately reached for the scar on my arm. “Yeah, I’m doing a lot better now. Thank you.”

“Good to hear.” He looked back at the table of men watching us. “You got balls walking in here like this.” He eyed the men behind me. “Especially if they are all you brought with you. I mean, if I was the one who tried to kill you, this wasn’t smart.”

I smiled. He was a smart man. “You’re right. If you’d been the one who tried to kill me, this would have been a dumb move. But you didn’t. I’m pretty sure I know who tried to have me killed and it wasn’t you.”

Lucian smirked, nodding. “You’re a smart woman.”

“The way I see it, it really didn’t make sense for you to do it.” I shrugged. “I mean, if you hated my father and my family so much, the perfect time to kill me was when I was at college and away from them. Why would you wait until I came back?” I shook my head. “No, the attack had nothing to do with you.”
