Everyone stopped moving and talking. I think a few of his guys stopped breathing. “You cut out his fucking eyes?”

I held up his tongue and then tossed it into the fire. I pulled the ax out of the fire and headed back into the building. The doctor was an older man that looked like he had seen some shit. He wiped the blood from his hands and stepped out of the room.

“He’s stabilized.” He let out a deep breath as he continued wiping his hands. “But anything else might send him into shock and he could die.”

I glanced into the room and shrugged. “I’m okay with that.”

Removing his hands was easy. The blade was red hot, and the cuts were clean and swift. I used the cuffs as a guide and cut just below them. His body jerked and twisted up off the table until he stopped moving completely.

“Doctor!” I yelled.

He rushed in. He felt Reggie’s neck for a pulse. “He’s still alive.” The doctor left the room. A few moments later he returned with his medical supplies. “I’m not making any promises.”

“I’m not asking for any.” With the ax in one hand, I picked up his hands and ears with the other before heading back outside. Lucian followed me out, shaking his head, but said nothing.

“What you gonna toss in the fire now? His ears?” Charles laughed.

Lucian’s men laughed until they saw his face go white. It takes a lot to make a crime boss’s face go white. They stopped laughing when I held up his ears.

“Who raised you?” asked Lucian, a crease between his eyes.

“Some really unqualified people.” I tossed the ears and hands into the fire. The smell of burning flesh was an unpleasant one, hard to describe. But you knew it when you smelled it. The men standing around the barrel backed away, their eyes wide.

“I would call this retribution,” said Lucian. “Go ahead and kill him.”

I shook my head. “The doctor’s trying to save him now but he’s not making any promises.”

“Let him die.” Lucian shook his head. “Killing him would be a mercy now.”

I gazed at Lucian as I stripped off the gloves. They were slick with blood, but I wasn’t sure what to do with them. It wasn’t like I could throw fire resistant gloves into the fire.

“I don’t want him to die.” I folded the gloves, holding them tightly in my hand. I’d decide what to do with them later. “Him dying wasn’t the point and I told him I wouldn’t kill him. And I’m a woman of my word.”

“So, you want him to live without hands?” Lucian scoffed.

I sighed. “I cut off his hands so he couldn’t touch anything. I cut off his ears and destroyed his inner ear so he couldn’t hear anything. I cut out his tongue so he couldn’t speak. I cut out his eyes so he couldn’t see. Could you imagine how maddening it would be to live everyday with no way to interact with the world around you? I wanted him to suffer, and I wanted him to be a lesson to everyone else.”

“Damn, Addie.” Lucian shrugged. “Remind me never to get on your bad side.”

“All hail the queen,” said one of Lucian’s bodyguards.

“I’d rather be the king.”

“What about the other guys?” Lucian arched an eyebrow.

“Well,” I glanced down at my watch. “They should be having their dicks cut off as we speak. Do you want them?”

Lucian shook his head. “Nah, I’ll take your word for it.”

The men around us chuckled. I was curious if Reggie was still alive, so I went back into the building and they followed me. The doctor was wrapping gauze around one of Reggie’s stumps.

“Guess he’s not dead.” I shrugged.

“I’m as surprised as you are,” Lucian replied.

My father annoyed me the next day when he asked me about the meeting. But I didn’t tell him anything. I wanted him to be surprised like everyone else. Was this a good idea? Probably not. But I was going to do it anyway. It was time I started taking charge.

“Padre, you’re not going to like it, but I promise it was for the right reasons.” I let out a dep breath as I poured us both a bourbon neat.
