I patted his arm. “I know. You coming in?”

Kent shook his head. “Not this time, but thanks. Wait here.” He slid his car into park and got out. Then he opened my door for me and extended his hand.

“Thanks.” I took his hand and let him help me out. “You know, if you weren’t my cousin….”

“Yeah, right.” He rolled his eyes. “You and Eli have been dancing around each other for years.”

“Yeah, right.” I laughed. “Keep telling yourself that.” I headed toward the steps where my father was waiting.

“You know, de Nile is a river in Africa!” Kent hollered after me.

I laughed, waving to him over my shoulder.

A moment later, I heard his car pull out the drive.

I took the long walk toward my father, ready to get this over with and go upstairs to take a shower and wash away the night.

“You’re back,” he said, looking up.

I smiled as I sat beside him. “I am. Were you waiting for me?”

“They’re coming over in a couple of hours,” he said, his expression serious. “Apparently, the task they want you to do has been agreed upon. I don’t know what it is yet, but I guess we’ll find out together.” He reached over and gave my hand a reassuring squeeze.

I sighed, thinking it would take the family a little longer to decide on what they wanted me to do to prove myself. It was all bullshit anyway. No Don in the history of the family ever had to… until now. But that was beside the point. If they wanted me to prove myself, then so be it. I was down for whatever.

“Guess I’ll go get ready.”
