CHAPTER11

Confessions~Brooklyn

I stepped awayfrom the couch and headed down the hall. I needed some privacy.

"Lincoln?"

"How in the hell did you do it?" he blurted into the phone.

I stopped. "Do what, Lincoln? I didn't do anything. Just hang on. Give me a few minutes, and we will be right there."

"You're telling me you had nothing to do with the lawyer that showed up to represent me? He's the real deal! Like…the prosecutor almost shit himself when he saw this dude walk in." He stopped for a moment, his tone changing. "Wait, we? Whose we?"

I shook my head, the words catching in my throat, and I felt Carter's hand on my shoulder. I looked up at him, and he took the phone from me, ending the call.

"What did you do?" The words tumbled out of my mouth.

He took a step forward and placed his hands on my waist. "I think it's best if you let me handle things from now on," he said.

"I asked what you did." My pulse quickened as I waited for his response.

I expected him to be upset and tell me not to talk back. But instead, Carter handed me my phone and led me to the bedroom. He motioned for me to sit on the bed, and he walked over to the window.

"I have a friend. He's an investigator, and considering your brother's predicament, I felt I needed more information about the situation.

I shook my head a little. "But Carter. I didn't ask you to help. I just needed the money. That's why I'm here, right? You're paying me for a child, and in turn, I was going to get my brother a lawyer that actually gave him a fair chance at proving his innocence."

"I know, it's just…" He struggled for the words before coming over to the bed.

He kneeled in front of me and took my hands in his. "I have access to the best the world has to offer, baby girl. I can get anything you could ever want or need for you, and this lawyer will see to it that your brother never sees a courtroom. The next time you talk to him, it won't be on jail visitation. He's going to walk free, Brooklyn. Today."

I just stared at him. It didn't seem possible. "But…why? Why would you do all this for me before I even give you what you want?" My stomach pitted in tight coils as I digested the whole situation.

"Because you are what I want."

His words stunted my tongue, and my heartbeat halted in my chest. I pulled back instinctively.

"I don't understand. I thought this was a business transaction. I am contracted to you."

"And I am indebted to you." His voice shook with vulnerability, and his forehead found mine. "Before I met you, I was a shell of a man. But the day I met you, I felt alive. You did something to me, little girl. You made me feel things I never have before, and now that I've felt that, I don't know if I can live without it. Without you."

His words nearly shattered me, and I wanted to believe them. Truly, I did. But it wasn't that simple for me. It never had been. "You hardly know me," I said softly. "How can you be so sure?"

Carter stood as he pulled my hand toward his chest. "Do you feel that? The way my heart is racing? No one has ever made it do that. That's how daddy knows, baby girl."

I swallowed and met his gaze. This entire time I thought everything I was feeling was a fluke. The way he made butterflies swarm in my stomach when he smiled, the way he made me scream out his name as he brought me to ecstasy, and the way he made me feel like the only girl in the world. I've only known this man for seventy-two hours, but if someone asked me if I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him, I would say yes in a heartbeat. As if he could read my thoughts, he let my hand go and turned in the direction of his walk-in closet.

"We need to get dressed to go see your brother."

"You're coming with me?" I stood in a swift motion and placed my hand on my chest.

He stepped out of his closet and pulled a soft polo shirt over his head. "Of course. Anything that concerns you concerns me."

"Oh, okay. I mean, I know you're busy, and you've already done—"

Before finishing my sentence, he closed the space between us, and his mouth crashed onto mine. He nearly brought me to my knees. His kisses were breathtaking but not forceful. Gearing up to break away, he pulled me closer, deepening our kiss until every nerve in my body went up in flames. It was so soft it nearly brought me to my knees. When the kiss finally ended, the room was spinning, and I lowered my feet back down to the carpet.

"I told you, little girl. Daddy is going to take care of everything."

I threw on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. Once I had all my things together, he grabbed my hand and pulled me toward the door.
