CHAPTER12

New Beginnings~Carter

The car was waitingfor us when we got downstairs, and it killed me to let go of her hand to open the passenger side door. She climbed in and then I followed suit. I hated myself for not telling her my true feelings from the beginning, the beginning being three days ago, but she was my end. Being with her made me realize it wasn't about the baby or appeasing my father. It was about her and me and the possibility of us. My father taught me that actions always spoke louder than words, and what better way to express my love toward her than lifting the heaviest boulder off her shoulders.

Stroking her thigh, I opened my mouth to speak when my phone vibrated in my pocket. I pulled it out, took a peek, and ignored the call. My father, of course. He never beat around the bush, and he only called for two reasons. Important business and our lawyer. Our family lawyer was the best of the best, but my father paid him, and he had a hard time keeping secrets from the old bastard. I ignored the second set of vibrations and returned my attention to my baby girl. As I took her in, I found myself comparing the contrast in our styles. I changed into a pair of slacks and a dark colored polo, and here she was wearing faded denim jeans and a unicorn-themed t-shirt with high-top tennis shoes. I loved it, though. I loved her.

"Hey," I said softly, putting my hand on her thigh. "You look nervous."

"I am," she said as a frosty look etched its way onto her features.

"You have nothing to be nervous about, princess. I told you, daddy took care of everything."

"It's not just that…" she trailed off. "It's me. It's Lincoln. Our life. We don't live in the same world as you do. You're rich and respected and—"

I cut her off right there because I didn't want to hear it. I picked her up by her waist and lifted her to my lap. She resisted, but I just pulled her into me and pressed my face into the softness of her curls.

"I told you, you are what I want."

"Even if I'm a trainwreck?" she asked, taking in a sharp breath.

I tightened my grip around her soft waist and separated her legs with my knee. "Yes."

"And my life is a dumpster fire?"

"A gorgeous dumpster fire," I said, grazing the shell of her ear.

"And my brother is a walking disaster?”

"My younger brother is in the looney bin. How's that for disaster?"

"Seriously?" Her interest piqued, and she turned in my lap.

I nodded in a slow and sinister manner. My movements made her giggle, and I forgot how much I loved to hear her laugh.

"Well, shit. Yeah, that's pretty bad," she teased me, and I loved it.

I spun her around until she was straddling me, and her breasts were inches from my face.

"Listen. How about we make a new deal, hmm? How about I make you mine forever, and you'll never have to worry about anything else in your life. Pain-in-the-ass-brother included in the deal.”

She studied me. "Is that really want you want?"

I cupped her face in my palms. "Baby girl, that's all daddy wants."

As much as I hated how my father dictated my life, I couldn't help but be a little grateful that he rode my ass so hard. If he hadn't, I wouldn't have never met Brooklyn.

Once we arrived at the jail, I took her hand and led her inside. Security check was a breeze, and I took her hand once more and brought it to my lips, kissing it reassuringly. A buzzer sounded, and a steel door glided open. The lawyer stood once he caught sight of me, and Brooklyn tore her hand from mine as she ran up to her brother. The loss of her touch was abrupt, but I let her go, my heart swelling in my chest as they embraced.
