LORD HALE

I followed my host body for miles through the forest. What an absolute waste of time and energy. She was frantic, maddened with hysteria; her brain and mind muddled and closed off. I couldn’t enter.

Even when those two wolves found her, she’d lashed out at them, kicking and bucking like a wild horse. I’d decided to keep my distance then and followed them from a fair distance away as they escorted her deeper into their territory.

Eventually, the trees gave way to plush green rolling lawns. I stopped at the edge. Some invisible barrier prevented me from entering. I watched as one of the wolves carried her across the lawn, away from me. Looking up, I scanned the area and pushed against the barrier again. Nothing. I couldn’t get through.

On the far side of the lawn, in the distance, I saw red brick houses, a small park with jungle gyms and what looked like the packhouse. It stood tall and proud in the middle of the grassy area, surrounded with neat little beddings, potted plants and footpaths. For some unknown reason, I couldn’t get any closer. Someone or something was denying me entry.

I scanned the houses, porches and balconies, until my eyes met with hers. A middle-aged woman sat on a porch-swing not too far away from the packhouse, staring straight at me. She saw me. Without a host. Impossible. A slow grin formed on her face as she stood to get a better view.

In a gust of wind, I disappeared back into the forest.
