Clearing his throat, he turned back to the tray and grabbed a plate, lifting the plastic lid to reveal what he’d brought. “I-uh wasn’t sure what you’d like, so I brought a little bit of everything.”

I thought of Mat. Of how he’d helped me choose a favourite dessert. I smiled, “that’s very kind of you. Thanks.” He nodded and reached out to hand me the plate. As soon as he did, he seemed to realise that I was still naked beneath the covers and he pulled his hand back, “oh.”

My cheeks warmed.

“Uh-wait, here,” he said, walking to the closet and pulling out one of his own shirts. A crisp white t-shirt. One I imagined he used as a night shirt.

I gratefully accepted and he turned, facing the door so I could pull it over my head. Once I was done, I cleared my throat and he turned, going straight for the plate again and handing it to me with a crooked smile. I frowned at it and his smile stretched even further.

“You know, I’m supposed to be mad at you,” I said, taking the fork and stabbing a piece of sausage harder than what was necessary.

He didn’t stop smiling. In fact, his smile only grew larger, showing a gorgeous dimple on his right cheek. “But you’re not anymore?” He asked, walking over and grabbing a sausage off my plate.

I cocked a brow at him, “no, I am.”

“But?”

“But you brought me food and my mother always said you shouldn’t bite the hand that feeds you.”

Raiden chuckled, the sound so beautiful and uplifting. I smiled around another bite, and watched him plop the sausage he’d stolen into his mouth.

“Well, that’s true.” He said, winking, both dimples now on full display. “I’ll have to remember that.”

“I’m serious, though.”

Sighing, he sat down beside me. “I know, I know.” He ran a hand through his hair, a quirk of his, I realised. “I just can’t seem to focus on anything right now. I mean, you’re sitting in my bed, wearing nothing but a t-shirt. My t-shirt. How can you expect me to think straight?”

I gazed down at myself, at Ray’s shirt and the plate which sat in my lap. I was decent, but he had a point. Pulling my eyes into thin lines, I pointed an index finger at him, “fine! But after breakfast, you’ve got some serious explaining to do!”

Mischief danced in Raiden’s eyes as he threw his hands up, “I come in peace.”

After our agreement, Ray continued talking while I ate. He told me all about his pack and how they did things here, especially things he’d changed since taking over from his dad. I listened, welcoming his presence and the calmness of his voice. It eased something inside of me, something that had broken somewhere along the way. But every time I looked up, I caught him staring at me with a goofy smile on his face. It warmed my heart and my cheeks. Perhaps there was hope for us after all.

We talked about anything and everything, except for the massive elephant in the room. The elephant patiently waited to trample my heart. To rip it out and stomp on it with its clumsy fat feet.
