CHAPTER 12

March

“So, anything new to tell me?”

Although it was only early March, the sun streamed into Emma’s kitchen, where Maya was sitting with a black nylon gown wrapped around her. Foils were being folded through her hair. Every few months, she would have some blonde highlights put in to lift her natural colour.

Maya updated Emma on her latest dating exploits. Not that there was much to tell. A couple of guys had been keen, but Maya hadn’t felt anything.

“Well, I’m glad to hear you’re listening to your heart,” Emma said. “Attraction does grow, but there needs to be something there in the first place. I think you’re going to need to kiss a few frogs first.”

“The last one kissed like a frog.”

Emma coughed and spluttered, trying to swallow the coffee she’d sipped in between inserting a foil. Maya giggled too.

“God, Maya, don’t do that!” Emma was wiping her chin with her sleeve.

“Sorry.” Maya smirked.

Emma composed herself, combing Maya’s hair. “He certainly wasn’t right, then. If you’re going to kiss a guy for the rest of your life, you’ve got to at least enjoy it. Anyone else in the pipeline?”

“No, but I forgot to show you this.” Maya held up the screenshot of DIYDes’s message.

Emma read, mouth open, occasionally looking at Maya then back at her phone. “Unbelievable!” she said, then giggled. “Oh, that’s nice that he wants to swap French Connection clothes!”

She was referring to the ‘fuck’ he’d spelt as ‘FCUK’.

“I could see you dating him, though,” Emma continued. “Maya and Nige … K. I. S. S. I. N —”

“Shut up!” Maya turned her phone away.

“Wow, what a minefield. You couldn’t make that stuff up. What a complete dickhead.” Emma’s tone became more sincere. “Maya, keep at it. Selina seems happy with her guy.”

“Yes, I have to believe that if I’m on there, genuinely wanting to find a guy, then there must be a guy out there who is right for me,” Maya said.

She still exchanged messages with PeterPan26 intermittently, but for some reason she didn’t mention this to Emma, and she had resumed conversations with other guys. She had a new one messaging her now, PJWard14.

Maya shrugged her shoulders with a sigh. The foils rustled. “This guy I’m talking to now seems okay. At least he shaves.”

“Designer stubble and beards are in.”

“Tell me about it.” Maya had always loved kissing Kyle just after he’d shaved. Soft lips, the smell of aftershave. He would be gentle, then as their passion grew his kisses would become more urgent. Maya chided herself. She kept comparing everyone to Kyle, and he was hardly a good example, cheating on her. Thinking about Kyle could enrage her, but if she looked back beyond the recent events, she could remember the good stuff.

“Did I tell you my cousin met her husband online?”

“No.”

Emma laughed. “But the stories she could tell you! One guy had awful teeth. Afterwards, she realised that in all of his photos he hadn’t been properly smiling.”

“Oh, dear.”

“His name was Ted, so from then on we referred to him as No-Teeth-Ted!”

Once Maya had stopped giggling, she said, “I won’t trust anyone who doesn’t smile in their photos from now on.”

“No, don’t!”

“You’ll like this, Em. I had this younger man message me the other day; he was only in his early twenties.”
