“Good for you.” I’m not really caring for this conversation.

“If you don’t mind me asking, Is your family also here in Tennessee? It would be great if I……...”

“I think it’s time for you to go now. Shut the door on your way out.”

She doesn’t respond and it is wise of her not to. I see her from the corner of my eyes get out of bed, clearly confused and speechless. She puts her clothes back on and leaves without uttering a word.

A breath I did not know I was holding escapes my lips when she is finally out of the room. I will be able to sleep better tonight, after the experience she just gave me, but I don’t know how much more of this I can take—suppressing the thoughts that no one would understand.

I walk to the window and swing it open, needing the cold breeze to soothe my body. The sky is clear, the stars twinkling in the sky, and the moon almost full. I rest my eyes on the horizon and once again start beating myself up for being so naïve.

If only it was easy for me to have a different perspective whenever I look at the horizon, maybe I would be better at life, smiling more, freely interacting with people, and unafraid of attachments. But then again, nothing would change. That ship sailed three years ago and I am better off as the boring, ever serious, lonely guy I am.
