Kaio didn’t say anything else, simply continuing to cook the meat and handing it to me one strip at a time as he ate his own share.

When I was so full I couldn’t hold anymore, I waved off the next piece offered. “I’m stuffed,” I said.

He simply nodded and continued to cook and eat the rest of it until everything was gone except for a pile of lizard skin that he had pulled the meat from.

He tugged several water bottles out of his pack and tossed one to me. “Keep the empties in your case,” he instructed me. “We can’t count on finding supplies every time we need them.”

He dragged the two cloaks we had scavenged from the bodies of the contestants he had killed. I felt bad wrapping mine around me, but suddenly I understood what Grace had meant when she’d said we all did what we needed to in order to survive.

“Good night,” I called out.

Kaio was busy banking the fire, so I didn’t really expect a response. But then, as he rolled himself up in his own new-to-him cloak and stretched out on the opposite side of the fire from me, he said, “Good night, Gwen. Sleep well.”

And just as I drifted off, I heard a voice inside my head whispering.

And may this night bring peace for you, my beautiful tiny human mate.

And for me, as well.
