Still, I slipped my red-soled pumps out of my samples case and onto my feet before I began the trek through the sand to our makeshift restroom.

When I returned to the fire a few minutes later, Kaio had already begun cooking dinner for us.

I dropped onto the woven mat next to his, feeling strangely contented.

The glow of the fire seemed to wrap us in our very own bubble. It was as if there were nothing else in the universe except Kaio, me, our campfire, and this tropical pool.

The orange firelight played against him, picking out the highlights in his hair.

I wrapped my arms around my shins and rested my cheek against my knees, turning my head so I could continue staring at him.

“So how does the monarch of an entire planet get to be such an adept camper?” I asked.

He smiled fondly, his eyes shining brightly in the flickering light, and I could see the memories flowing through his mind. Moving pictures, a parade of faces, a lifetime of experiences.

“Dismor,” he finally replied.

“The Amazon who wanted to cut my throat with a spear?” I couldn’t imagine that woman, with her warrior ways and fierce words, building a fire or sitting leisurely by a lake fishing.

He nodded. “She’s a big softie really.”

“Sure she is. I’ll remember that next time she’s threatening me with a blade.”

We laughed, lapsing into silence.

Moments later a slithering noise made me freeze, clasping my legs tighter as I lifted my head to gaze around nervously.

Kaio felt my fear immediately.
