Reaching for Nick’s hand, she held it in her own. “And maybe take me out riding. Or perhaps escort me to Graton’s assemblies. They do hold balls in Graton, do they not? You would have to teach me English dances first, of course.”

Recognition lit Nick’s face and he turned back to her, a small smile widened his mouth, pushing the creases in his cheeks further back. “I see. So, Giulia Pepper, I suppose I must beg your permission to court you.”

“Oh, Nick, what a splendid idea,” Giulia said.

Nick chuckled as he took her hand and placed it on his arm to escort her outside to where the carriage, Mabel, and Lord Hart awaited.

“You know what this means, don’t you?” he asked as he ushered her down the stairs and into the foyer.

“What is that?”

“That by this time next year,” he whispered into her ear, “you will be Mrs. Giulia Pepper.”

She turned to give him a look of confusion. “I already am Giulia Pepper.”

“Well,” he said with an air of annoyance, “you know what I mean.”

“I think I do,” Giulia replied facetiously. She knew precisely what he meant. For Mrs. Giulia Pepper did, indeed, sound absolutely marvelous to her.
