Reaching for Mac’s arm, she placed her hand on his sleeve. “If you would be so kind, I would greatly appreciate the assistance.”

She expected him to crouch, to cup his hands and create a foothold, so he surprised her by closing his hands around her waist, lightly pressing his fingers against her ribs as he found a secure hold on her and effectively discharged the air from her lungs. Lifting her, Mac placed her softly on the saddle and she hurried to hook her leg on the pommel and arrange her skirt over her legs.

Clearing his throat, Mac stepped back. “How is your leg?”

It was a novelty to be so thoroughly considered. It unnerved her, but she appreciated it. “I am well.”

He regarded her closely before nodding. “Shall we round the pond or return to the house the way we came?”

“It would be faster to finish the path.”

He watched her as though he knew this already, but it did not answer his question. Lifting his eyebrows, he said, “So, back the way we came?”

She smiled. “I would not be opposed to a longer ride.”

“Nor I.”

He left her so he might mount his steed, and Mabel drew in a steadying breath. She needed to be very careful, or she was in danger of falling very much in love with Mac once again.
