Kantus glared at me with his red face. “You won’t meld with us.”

“Only Eve touches my cock.”

“It won’t happen again, Scion” the yellow one said, voice trembling and gasping for air.

Cleopatra fell down beside the yellow body. She hugged Kantus tight and looked up at me with an accusing glare. “You fucking asshole!”

I ignored them and turned to Eve. I spoke low so the others wouldn’t hear. I’d trusted Midwife, but now that Kantus was clouding her judgement, I couldn’t be certain it was safe to trust her. “What do we do now, Matron?”

She looked around, as if trying to visualize the reduced habitable sphere of the terraforming core. Her eyes moved along the horizon, like she was tracing just how far out it would be warm enough for her and Cleopatra to survive.

“Remember,” I said, “you have to give birth.”

“I know,” she said. Her voice was heavy and resigned. She understood how bad things might get, but was keeping her cool despite it all. Fuck, I loved this woman. “I think we wait here for now. We radio Thuliak in four hours. Maybe he can find a place for us to hole up?”

Tharkur had refused to give us his plasma rifle. I’d considered killing him for it, but starting a war between his pack and mine was not in anyone’s best interests. The last thing I needed was having entire squads ofInseminatorshunting us down.

So we still had very limited weaponry, but at least with Kantus’ three bodies we’d gained a decent amount of manpower.

“Kantus,” I said, “how far can your bodies go from each other?”

“Not too far,” he said. “Funnily enough, it has to do with the inverse square law—”

“Enough!” I growled. “How many meters?”

“If my bodies get more than about 500 meters from each other, they start to lose cohesion.”

“The bloody hell does that mean?”

“It’s a big stretch of the imagination, Scion, but try to imagine your brain were 500 meters long and wide.”

Eve laughed, and I glared at her. It stopped her laughter.

“I’m imagining it,” I said. “Easily.”

“In the universe,” Kantus said, “it’s not just light that can only move so fast, buteverythingcan only move so fast. It’s a universal speed limit of everything. It’s why we needed Grasp Drives to circumvent the speed limit.”

“Light moves extremely fast,” I said, certain that I was finally right about something related to maths.

“Each thought,” Kantus’s yellow body said, “each signal from the brain to the arm, or to the cock, has to travel along the EM field as a particle, in my case, the bodies interact through the C field—one that humans haven’t discovered yet—and—”

I sighed loudly, and Kantus thankfully took my hint.

“500 meters, Scion. Would you like me to spread out to that maximum distance?”

“Form a perimeter,” I said, taking two knives from our supplies and holding them out. The yellow and orange bodies took a knife, and the red body unholstered its railgun. The orange body pressed its lips together and raised a finger. “This body is staying with Fucktoy.”

“With fuckingwho?”

“Fucktoy Cleopatra,” he said, “that’s what I’m calling her.”

Eve scoffed. “Midwife, isn’t that…degrading?”

Cleopatra smiled and nodded. “It’ssodegrading. Who would have thought I was into that? But I totally am.”

“Very well,” I said, “I’m not calling her that though. You may keep one body with Midwife, send the others out to patrol.”

The red and yellow bodies went off in opposite directions, and the orange body stayed put and spoke. “I’ll have them in a circle, Scion. I can move very quietly in this snow.”
