I nodded and stood up, hefting my laser rifle. Eve looked up at me with wide, glassy eyes. “You’re going out there too?”

“The plan we made with Thuliak is bursting at the seams, Love. If we’re going to survive out here, we’re going to need more supplies. More weapons. Medicine…”

She jerked her head toward Kantus’s orange body, then mouthed two words to me. “Send him.”

I shook my head, but sat down next to her. “If I send him, we lose three bodies. It pains me to admit it, but there is strength in numbers, and you and the babies are safer this way, Love.”

She frowned. It was breaking my fucking heart, but we needed a lot more shite. We either needed more blankets, medicine, food, and survival kit so that we could skirt the very edge of the habitable zone, or we needed more weapons so we could risk going closer in toward Ginsburg. If I didn’t findsomething, then we weren’t safe anywhere.

“I’ll be back in time to radio Thuliak,” I said, kissing her on the lips. “If I go now.”

She nodded, and I could tell she wanted to beg me not to go, but she was strong, and she held her tongue.

I met Kantus’ eyes, and then Midwife’s. “Keep her safe. Or I’ll kill you.”

Midwife gasped.

“Not you,” I said, “him. All three of him though.”

“Understood, Scion,” he said. “I’ll keep her safe. She’s Matron to all of us now.”

“Tell that to your fucking Scion if you see him again,” I spat.
