EVE

“So, Kantus,” I said, speaking in a low whisper. “How exactly did you—um, well—were you always three guys?”

He shook his head. Only the orange body was visible, because the red and yellow one were still patrolling in a perimeter around us. Kantus’s other bodies were protecting us while Tschenkar was out in search of supplies. They must have been near the 500-meter limit, because Kantus’s remaining body had become very slow.

Two or three seconds after I asked the question, he looked down at me. He shook his head slowly and deliberately. Midwife was sitting next to me, trying to get me to drink way more water than I wanted to. I was very tired of getting up to go pee, especially when I was worried that one of Kantus’ bodies would spot me.

“No,” Kantus said. “This body was named Kanarch. The other two were Tukir and Suun.”

“So ‘Suun’ got stuck with just being the letter ‘s’ at the end of your name?”

After another too-long delay, he narrowed his eyes at me. My question must have been annoying, impolite, or both. He answered it anyway. “Suun is no more. We—I am Kantus.”

Midwife Cleopatra met my eyes. They glimmered with the same curiosity I used to see in a particularly hot gossip circle. She wanted to know this stuff way more than I did, but she was too shy to ask him directly. I could tell Kantus was getting prickly from my questions, but I’d take the hit for Midwife.

“How did you get to be Kantus though?” I asked. “If you used to be three people.”

I did a little countdown in my head. Three. Two. O—

“We fucked each other,” he said.

I tried not to let my eyes widen too much, but Cleopatra lunged forward, looking up at him with her mouth hanging open. “And that merged your bodies into one person? Really? So are we already a triumvirate then, or do we need another guy who is also two or three bodies?”

Another delay, then a response. “This is taboo in most packs, but the Hivemind always encouraged evolutionary diversity. Allowing us to mindmeld when we fuck each other gave us many advantages, but we separated ourselves further from the other Khetar. Thuliak and Tschenkar, for example, have always looked down on us. There is pressure to innovate, but also pressure not to diverge too far from other packs. TheInseminatorsare perhaps at the far limit of allowable divergence.”

“So,” Cleopatra started to say, but Kantus started speaking again. The delay meant it was hard for us not to talk over him.

“We are already breeding you, Fucktoy,” Kantus said. “Only two of the bodies’ seed will produce the offspring. Without the Hivemind, we’ll never know which two, but two is all you need to give us children.”

“That’s good,” Cleopatra said, laughing nervously, “I do only have three holes after all.”

“Three perfect little holes,” Kantus said, as I began to plug my fingers into my ears.

The whole orgy thing had been hot, I admit, but Tschenkar had been there. Kantus and Cleopatra hadn’t fucked in front of me yet, and I kind of doubted he could with his bodies all separated like this, but I didn’t think I’d be able to get turned on by it without Tschenkar around, and I’d feel really weird just sitting there watching my friend get pounded by a three-bodied alien guy I barely knew.

I waited a while, then unplugged my ears only to hear the tail-end of what Kantus was saying “...raw materials are too difficult to find.”

“What raw materials?” I asked.

Kantus sighed. “I explained already, but you had your fingers in your ears.”

“I didn’t want to hear you talking about Midwife’s holes.”

“Raw materials for a radio,” Kantus said. “We should build as many as we can. Each small group of Khetar should have a radio, then we can all coordinate over long distances.”

“Didn’t you guys have time to make these all on theInseminator? Not to point fingers, but I don’t quite understand why you didn’t stay in orbit longer, maybe coordinate with Thuliak, maybe build a bunch of radios on your ship to bring down. Instead you just kind of charged headlong into the atmosphere?”

Tschenkar had made the right call to rush things, because there had been no Khetar on the surface. Tharkur could have waited at least a few days.

“We were thinking with our cocks,” Kantus said. “We heard a vague rumor of a virgin planet. The idea of an entire planet full of nothing but virgin women sent us into a mating frenzy. Since we evolved to fuck rather than to fight, the pull of so many virgins was impossible for us to resist.”

His cock was getting harder as he spoke. I made sure to keep my eyes well above his waist.

Kantus looked down at his cock and grinned, then kept speaking. “Of course, before we Grasped, we thought once we arrived in orbit, we’d need only to negotiate with whoever was First. I shouldn’t say this to Thuliak’s mate, but we were prepared to offer himanythingto be Second. Anything.”

I made a mental note of that, in case it would somehow be good leverage for Thuliak or Tschenkar later.
