It’s beentwo days since the emotional reunion we had at Kyle and Cassy’s. When I got to Max’s today, he was on the phone to him, I tried not to eavesdrop, but he was busy telling Kyle how nervous he is for today. Boy oh boy, he really doesn’t know what’s about to hit him as we get out of my car. We’ve driven west for the first time in what feels like forever. I look up at the building as we get out of the car. But nothing hits me, no sense of homecoming, no remorse, not even a sense of dread. There’s just nothing there as I look up at my child-hood home. It’s a decent semi-detached in a decent-ish area but I just have no feelings towards it.
I look at Max as he rounds the car to be at my side, his black shirt crisper than normal, jeans straighter and he’s got a big bunch of peonies in his hands and a nervous smile covering his mouth.
“You okay, Ali?” he asks softly as he holds a hand on my shoulder for maybe a beat too long. I turn to him and nod.
“Yeah, I’m good,” I assure him. “And, Max, please let me just say sorry in advance, for anything she might say. My mother has her opinions on everyone, me included. She can be vile, rude, and unforgiving. I’d love to tell you she has a heart of gold under all that, but she really doesn’t. There’s a reason I moved out when I was seventeen and barely ever come back,” I tell him, mostly into his shirt. Without my heels on he’s easily a foot taller than me. He tips my chin with his fingers. His skilful fingers that I may or may not have had a dream about last night—is it a thing to be this horny whilst pregnant? Or is it just spending all my time with this god of a man next to me without being able to touch him that is getting me all hot and bothered?
His fingers stroke a small circle on my cheek. “Angel,” he breaths and I almost hyperventilate at the pet name again. “It’s okay. We’re doing this together and you just say if you want to leave, we go. Kay?” He nods his head like it’s just that easy.
Yeah, easy.
Easy breezy.
