“You are. I was so excited this morning I ran almost two laps around Hyde Park before I got here. I know I’m not supposed to share with anyone who I see in here, but I had to tell my girlfriend. We’re your biggest fans. She works in the city, proper career path for my girl.” He looks smug, his eyes glassing over as he thinks of his love. Finch’s smile is wide too. I guess I have that stupid smug grin going on too now. “But even she was jealous when I told her.”

“You’re Blank Space fans?” Finch asks.

“I’m probably not supposed to tell you that am I? I swear I’m never this unprofessional but you two are just like normal guys. I kind of feel I can tell you without you losing your shit at me.”

I chuckle at Danny’s genuineness.

“Dude, we are normal guys, and if we weren’t having to hide behind this glass my friend here would be in the away end and swearing at me all the way home on the tube because the Gunners have thumped their Eagle arses again.” Finch laughs. “But it’s always good to meet a music fan. Thanks, man.” He reaches over the bar and shakes his hand. “Can we sign something for your girlfriend?”

“I really don’t think I can ask that.”

“You’re not. I’m offering. Have you got a programme or something?”

Danny nods enthusiastically at Finch’s suggestion and reaches under the bar to pass him one along with a sharpie marker pen.

“What’s your girl’s name?”

“Alice,” he says proudly as I watch Finch scribble in his usual curly font across the front of the programme.

Dear Alice,

Thanks for being such a Blank Space Fan!

You’ve got a good man in Danny. Let him keep you happy, because the way his eyes light up when he says your name is like something straight out of a love song.

Love,

Kyle Finch

He chucks the book and the pen as I stand and walk to the bar, stretching my hand out to Danny’s to shake. He really is a good kid. Kid. I don’t even know how old he is. Probably the same age as me.

“I know I’m not allowed to say this either.”

“Say it,” I tell him. “We’re tight, dude. Say whatever the fuck you like in front of me and my boy here.”

“It’s really good to see you two together. After what the press have been saying about you both. It’s made my day that you’re here together.”

I smile at him.

“Mate. This curly haired dork has been my best friend for a long time. It’s going to take more than him kissing my little sister to make me fuck off out his life.”

“It was worth a shot though, wasn’t it?” Finch adds and I twat him round the head as he barks a laugh. I turn my attention back to the programme. Turning to the stats on the back cover and scribble my name over the picture of the pitch.

Alice,

We Love you. Keep Dreaming. Keep Rocking.

Max Baines

“Danny, mate?” Finch clears his throat. “You don’t suppose you could give me and my boy like five minutes, could you? I’ve got something I’ve got to ask him.”

I tip my head, watching the exchange. Danny nods.

“Sure thing, of course. How long do you need?”

“Just until the end of half-time?”

“So, like ten more minutes?”
