“Alison, the way I see it. You guys have always had this thing. I’m not sure if either of you ever really noticed it or if you did, you never really paid enough attention, but we all saw it. Cassy’s asked me for years if I thought you knew how madly in love her brother was with you. I’m so lucky with Bobby, he’s sensitive as well as kind. He’s sweet yet so damn sexy and I’ll never want another man or another life other than the perfect little one him and me and Eddie have. I never thought I’d get a real family and yet he gave me just that. But even me with my silly romantic heart gets a little dumb struck at the way you two look at each other.”

“What do you mean?”

“Have you ever seen a deer caught in headlights?”

I nod.

“Surprised.” She smiles at me.

“But there’s more than that with you two. You’re stunned, amazed that the other is real, that they’re talking, moving, breathing. With your heart in your eyes in all wonder of how perfect that other person is.”

“I’m far from perfect.”

“And neither is Max. My god don’t we all know that but you two are just meant to be together,” she says with a smile.

That stray smile tugs at my lips again.

“When Max first heard about Finch and Cassy. We all know he behaved badly but Cassy was certain it would break them, but I knew it wouldn’t. Those two are made to be together, they were put on the planet to love each other. The same way me and Bobby were. You and Max are the same, babe. Even if your journey’s been a messy one, it’s taken a while to come to, but it’s blaringly obvious that you are his and he’s yours.”

I want to nod but another painful contraction rips through me.

“But first. We need to get that little baby out and into the world!”
