“Thanks,Finch. I’m not sure if I could do this without you here,” I tell Kyle as we draw closer and closer to the hospital. My heartbeat is running at a crazy pace.

“Don’t be stupid. Of course, I’d be here with you. Alison would never forgive me if I didn’t get you here.”

“Yeah, but you didn’t have to, you could have chucked me in a car and gone back and watched the game.”

“Dude, if the shoe was on the other foot, you’d be there in a heartbeat for me and you know it.”

I reached a hand out to grasp his shoulder.

“I would. Man, I really would,” I assure him, noticing my hand shaking as the car takes a sharp corner. We’re at the wrong hospital to where Ali wanted. This place is closer to home, but she wanted the private birthing pool, the water birth. She colour-coded her birthing plan—of course, she would. She’s the most organised person I know. She knows it back to front; I’ll be honest I kind of do too. She’ll be so stressed right now that it’s not going to plan.

I’ve messaged her saying we’re on the way, but I’ve not got enough signal to call. Believe it or not we’re in the middle of fucking London. The biggest and best city in the whole of the United Kingdom and I can’t make a simple phone call.

I glance over at Finch. He looks almost as nervous as me as he runs a hand through his curly mop of hair. I know he’s over the fall out. I know I am too but watching him, looking at him here with me has a wave of emotions crashing over me, because I never thought we could ever really be this close again.

“I’m sorry, Finch,” I blurt out.

“What for?” He scrunches his face up at me, as confused as I feel.

“For everything.” I sigh. “For putting my guard up so high. For not letting you be okay around me anymore. For watching you tiptoe around me for so long when all you wanted to do was adore and love my sister. I can’t hate you for that. I never did. You’re my best friend, man.”

“Baines. Seriously. I know you’re good with us being together. I’m in love with your sister but I fucking love you too, man. You know that.”

I nod. He nods. Somehow my best friend understands my head is fucking crazed right at this moment.

“Dude. Dude. I’m about to have a fucking baby,” I blurt. Followed by a large gulp.

“With Alison.” Finch is almost laughing.

“With Alison.” I repeat.

“I mean seriously, how the fuck this hasn’t happened years ago I’ll never know.”

“What?” I ask him, me with a confused face now, my head tipped to the side.

“You and Alison. We’ve all known you want each other. You’ve had girls, yeah, but you’ve never let anyone have your heart. That was always safely locked up for her.”

“You sappy bastard, no it wasn’t.”

“Wasn’t it? Why have you never had a serious girlfriend?”

“Why haven’t you until now? Because we didn’t need to. Because why would we when girls fell at our feet everywhere we went?” I reason with him.

“But that wasn’t ever enough. You let the girls suck your cock, yeah, but you smiled at her, you laughed with her. You told her everything.”

“I tell you everything too.”

“You don’t want to make babies with me though, do you?”

I shake my head with a laugh.

“I love her, dude.”

“I know you do. Now let’s go get her.”
