Laz released a ragged sigh. It was too damn early for any of this. “I planned to call you,” he said. When we were done, he wanted to add but didn’t.

“But you didn’t,” Remy said, anger marring his tanned skin as his steady gaze stayed on Laz.

It didn’t take a genius to know the man didn’t like him, which was fine. The feelings were mutual. The guy was too pretty, too uptight, and if Laz’s suspicions were correct—too soft. Remy was the type of guy who was all talk and couldn’t back up what he was spewing. A guy who probably followed the rules a hundred percent and ignored the gray areas—and in law enforcement work, there were always gray areas.

“How’d you know the car was here?” Ashton asked Ted.

“A few hours ago, a neighbor reported an abandoned car with bullet holes sitting out here. When the 911 operator entered the info into the system, including the license plate number, we were alerted. Now imagine my surprise to find you guys here. I won’t even bother asking how you found the vehicle.”

Ted was old-school police. He supported the men and women in blue to the core. Since Laz and Ashton were former Atlanta PD, the older man trusted that they wouldn’t sabotage his case. He would also give them grace in knowing how important it was that Laz found the people who gunned him down.

“We could arrest all of you for tampering with physical evidence. A felony,” Remy said, his gaze steady on Laz.

Now, this motherfucker was a different story, Laz thought.

The man’s holier-than-thou attitude was on full display, and there was no doubt he had it in for him. Laz wasn’t sure if it was because of his past reputation while with Atlanta PD, or it could be jealousy, for all Laz knew. Whatever it was, he wasn’t going to let this cocky young punk get under his skin.

He glared right back at the man.

“But we won’t,” Ted added quickly, picking up on the tension. “Just tell me that you didn’t touch, find or take anything.”

“We didn’t,” Ashton said before Laz could respond. “We just got here.”

“Well, did you find anything?” Ted asked as he slipped on a pair of latex gloves.

“Nope.” Laz moved to stand near the front passenger side. “Except there’s blood on the inside of this door. Looks like I might’ve clipped one of the perps, but not enough to cause real damage.”

Remy stood a few feet away, shaking his head. “Shooting in the middle of a busy street and possibly wounding someone. We should have you down at the station being questioned and maybe even charged.”

“Man, quit being such an asshole,” Laz said before he could stop himself.

The guy was itching for a fight—one that Laz had no intentions of starting. Whether he and Journey were on good terms or not, what she thought still mattered to him. She had already reamed him out at the hospital about what he’d said to Ted. He wouldn’t make that mistake again. Besides, if things went sideways with the case, he didn’t want to put Ted in a compromising position.

As for Remy? The guy could tumble off a side of a cliff, and Laz wouldn’t stop his fall.

Remy stomped closer. “You?You’re calling someone an asshole? Man, from what I hear—”

“I don’t give a damn what you’ve heard about me or who you’ve heard it from. If it’ll make you feel more like a man to haul my ass downtown, fine. Let’s do this. Just let me call my lawyer, and we can make a move.

Remy snorted. “Yourlawyer?” He mumbled something else under his breath about the ADA as he moved back to where he was initially standing, and Laz slowly turned to face him fully.

“What did you say?”

At first, he thought the guy wasn’t going to repeat himself, but then he spoke. “I said I don’t know what the ADA sees in you. She could’ve done a lot better, but she chose to marry a thug.”

Someone groaned. Laz wasn’t sure if it was Ashton or Parker, but he felt them both inch a little closer to him.

Laz eyed Remy up and down, then he laughed. “So, what I’m hearing is that you think you’d be better suited for her.”

“Well, I wasn’t thinking that, but yeah, I do.”

Laz burst out laughing. “Man, my lady iswaytoo much woman for you. You couldn’t handle her even on your best day. I suggest you quit fantasizing aboutmywife.”

The man’s blue-eyed gaze darkened, and a vein in his forehead popped out. It looked as if Remy wanted to say more but kept his mouth shut.

Laz moved away from the vehicle and approached him but managed to stop an arm’s length away. He didn’t trust himself to get any closer. “And if your dumb ass even thinks about stepping to her, it won’t end well for you.”

Remy’s blond eyebrows pulled into a perfect V. “Are you threatening me?” Remy moved close enough for Laz to smell cinnamon on his breath.
