Journey slipped her arms around Laz’s neck, glad she no longer had to worry about his wound. It had finally healed. He had a small scar on the front of his shoulder and a larger one on the back of it, but no mobility problems, thank goodness. He was lucky to be alive, and Journey would never take him or his love for granted.

When the kiss ended, Laz lifted his head but didn’t release her. “Now that you’re unemployed, what do you think about us having another baby?” he asked, wiggling his eyebrows.

“Funny you should ask.”

Laz’s smile dropped, and his hands fell from her hips. “Wait. You’re preg—”

“Nooo!” she said quickly and looped her arms around him. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to imply that I was. What I meant was the thought had crossed my mind while I was holding Zuri. If we….” Her cell phone rang, and she dug it from the side pocket of her handbag.

“Hello?”

“Journey?”

Her brows furrowed at the unfamiliar voice. “Yes. Who’s calling?”

“This is Nina from Randolph and Tate.”

Journey’s heart leaped into her chest, and she grinned at Laz, who was looking at her questioningly. “Hey, Nina. How are you?”

“I’m great. I’m calling because I’d like to officially offer you the job. We would love to have you join our team.”

Journey did a little shimmy as she listened to the woman explain the offer that paid more than she’d been making at the DA’s office. The benefits were similar, but what appealed to Journey most were the hours—only forty hours a week max—and she’d be working with nonprofit agencies.

“Nina, thank you for the offer. It all sounds wonderful, but can I get back to you tomorrow? I want to discuss it with my husband.”

“Of course. I look forward to hearing from you soon.”

“Sounds good, and thanks again!” Journey said, barely able to contain her excitement before disconnecting the call. She held the phone to her chest, grinning from ear to ear, knowing that this was the start of a new chapter in her life. The type of work she’d be doing was exactly what she wanted to do.

“Okay, what’s going on?” Laz asked, smiling. He knew she had interviewed with two law firms that only worked with nonprofit organizations.

“I’m no longer unemployed!” she squealed. “The Randolph and Tate Firm offered me the position.”

“Oh, wow. Congratulations, baby!” He pulled her into his arms and kissed her. “We’re going to have to celebrate.”

Journey told him about the position. The idea of doing what she loved while keeping her promise to Laz about not working crazy hours only made her more excited.

“That’s amazing. It sounds like a perfect fit. I’m proud of you.”

“Thank you.”

“Wait. Hold up” Laz held her at arm’s length. “Does this mean having another baby is off the table?”

Journey tapped her finger against her chin. “Hmm…well, I guess everything’s negotiable. How about we go home, and you can…plead your case.”

With a cocky grin spreading across his handsome face, Laz slipped his arm around her and pulled her against his hard body.

“There you go lawyering me again, but I’m here for it. Let me take you home so I can present you with my opening statement.”

Journey laughed. “Bring it!”
