COME OVER

Gemma

I’ve spent my whole life trying to run away from the things that make me anxious. It’s any wonder how I made it far enough to lose my virginity to Wyatt Everdeen, my dream guy.

“Please don’t go, Gemma,” Wyatt calls after me.

“I have to,” I reply over my shoulder.

“There’s nothing going on between Natalie and I. She’s misguided. Crushing on her teacher and misusing the cell phone number that I gave my students for emergencies only,” he explains while standing barefoot in the hallway.

Just get inside your apartment, Gemma. Hurry!my inner voice insists.

Phew! A sense of relief washes over me as soon as I get back into my apartment. Then I quickly lock my door. It’s better this way. Now I don’t have to explore whatever this is between us.

“Please, Gemma,” he whispers brokenly through my door. “Can you come back over? Let’s talk about things.”

“It’s no big deal, Wyatt,” I answer, not wanting to get into it with him. “Goodnight.”

“No big deal?!? I’ve waited so long to be with you. Now things are ruined,” he blurts out. “Please…come back over to my apartment and let’s keep talking. The lava cakes are still warm and I—”

“I had a great time tonight, Wyatt,” I say, cutting him off. “But it’s been a long night and I really should go to sleep.”

“I’m sorry if I scared you,” he remarks quietly.

I blink. “What?”

“You think I’m one of those guys, don’t you?” He frowns briefly. “Yeah, well I’m not. I’m the loyal type. I’m a one-woman man,” he states adamantly. “I’ll wait however long it takes, Gemma.”

I lick my lips. “For what?”

“For you to trust me,” he grits out. “Hell, for you to love me as much as I love you.” His jaw clenches before he turns and walks away.

My mouth falls open. “What?”

I look out my peephole and see that he’s gone. And now his apartment door is closed.

A few minutes later, I hear music coming from Wyatt’s apartment.

What’s that song that he’s playing?

Oh wow. He’s playing Jeff Buckley'sLover, You Should’ve Come Over. The acoustics of the song sound amazing! Overwhelmed with excitement, I press my ear against our shared wall and listen in further. Which album is this live version on?

Wait, what?

The realization of what’s happening washes over me. Wyatt is singing the lyrics as he strums his guitar. Oh my God! His voice is so beautiful and calming.

This can’t be happening!

I can’t believe that Wyatt is singing Jeff Buckley’sLover, You Should’ve Come Overto me!

This was the perfect date…until I saw that mood-killing text message. It seems trivial now when compared to everything good about tonight.

Wyatt has been amazing. And he seemed so genuine and so excited throughout the night.

He’s doing all of this for me.
