“She and Landon had a video call a little bit ago at a housewarming party. One of the kids asked Landon to call her. That’s when I got a glimpse of her.”

“Let me guess. The little girl was Phoebe?” Mitzi tossed out.

“You know her?”

“Landon’s told me a bit about the families in the nanny match group. The women are your friends, right?”

“Charlotte, Penny, and Libby have been my best friends since we were five years old.”

“In Miss Miliken’s kindergarten class,” Madelyn supplied.

The girls must have mentioned it to Madelyn. “God bless that woman for putting up with us.” She chuckled. “Well, putting up with me. Penny, Char, and Libby were model students.”

“I can imagine,” Madelyn answered with her trademark sly smile.

But there was something else—something Madelyn wasn’t saying. But before she could ask, Landon charged toward them.

“I have to head up to Tomás and Bess’s place,” he announced, jamming his phone into his pocket. “Are we done with the lawyer and the contest business?”

The suit.

She’d forgotten about the Luxe attorney. She peered at the table and found the man on his phone, scribbling on a piece of paper.

“I believe we’re done,” Mitzi answered. “But I’ll touch base with the attorney before heading to the airport.”

Landon nodded as anguish welled in his eyes.

“What’s the situation with Aria?” Madelyn pressed.

“She might have headed into the woods. Bess and Tomás aren’t sure.” He checked his watch. “It’ll be dark soon, and we can’t have her out there alone at night. I have to get up to Evergreen.”

She glanced at Mitzi, recalling the woman’s request.

What would a wife and an aunt do at a time like this?

And then it hit her. If he was going, she was going with him.

She reached into her pocket and pulled out her keys. “Let’s go. I can drive.”

He stared at her like she’d rattled off her statement in an alien language.

Did henotwant her to come with him?

It didn’t matter. If Aria was missing, they could use all the help they could get.

“Your car won’t make it where we’re going. Bess and Tomás live in the foothills outside the city in Evergreen. It’s not city terrain. It’s gravel roads and steep inclines.”

Did he disrespect her Volvo?

Oh, hell no.

The man was distraught, and she could grant him some grace, but that was no reason to dis Carol.

“Carol will make it just fine.”

“Carol barely made it here, Harper,” he huffed. “Have you checked your belts?”

She gestured to her hobo-chic—okay, just hobo—attire. “Hello? I’m wearing sweatpants. I don’t know what my lack of a belt has to do with my car?”
