“Yeah, it’s them,” he said and shook his head as if he’d woken up from a trance. He exited the vehicle and met the pair in front of the car.
The tall, slim Bess embraced Landon. Her long, dark auburn braid swished to the side as she pulled back, and the two spoke. Tomás patted Landon on his shoulder, and to her surprise, headed her way.
OMG!She was still in the car.
She reached for the handle, but Tomás got there first and opened the door.
“You must be Harper, Landon’s wife,” he said in a gentle Spanish accent.
She pasted a smile to her lips that could put a beauty queen to shame. “And you must be Tomás,” she replied—to her freaking father-in-law—just as she remembered she looked like the opposite of a beauty queen.
But Tomás didn’t seem to notice. Not to mention, the man didn’t look overly concerned for the welfare of his grandchild. The man’s vibe was pretty chill for someone who’d misplaced a kid. He had to be in his late sixties or possibly his early seventies. With kind eyes, silver hair, and a bushy mustache, Tomás was as round as Bess was slender. “And I see you brought snacks,” he added and patted his belly.
“I thought Aria might like a bonbon.” She glanced at the tray teeming with chocolates. Holy cocoa party! She’d stolen a bejesus load of sweets. “Or twenty. We’ve got enough chocolate to feed an army.”
Deep lines near Tomás’s eyes crinkled as he gifted her with a warm grin. “You and our granddaughter will get along just fine.”

“Have you found Aria?” she asked and glanced at Landon and Bess.
“Not yet, but I have a feeling she’s close by. Bess, on the other hand, is worried she’s gotten lost in the woods.”
“But you’re not concerned?”
“Like I said, I have a hunch she hasn’t strayed far.” He leaned in. “Bess thinks I’m crazy, but between you and me…”
“Yes?” she whispered.
Curiosity glinted in the man’s almond-shaped eyes. “I believe you’re the reason she’s gone missing.”
