Penny pointed to the vehicle. “Baxter Park Assisted Living Center Transport is written on the side. It must be somebody from that care facility on the other side of the field.”

The tinted driver’s side window lowered, and a man leaned out. “Have you seen an older woman in a pink shirt and khaki pants? She might be carrying one of those piping bags for frosting cakes and cookies.”

There’s a question you don’t hear every day.

“One of our residents is missing. I’m a nurse from the assisted living community across the way,” the man added.

They abandoned the swing and walked toward the SUV.

“No, we haven’t seen anyone,” Penny answered. “But we’ll look around the school for you.”

“Thank you. Mary doesn’t usually wander too far, but she’s one of our dementia residents. She can easily become confused and disoriented.”

The SUV disappeared down the next block, and she turned to her friends. “Why don’t we split up. I’ll check the wooded area that runs along the creek, and you guys can take the school and check the block ahead.”

“Sounds good. We’ll meet back at the swings,” Charlotte replied as they fanned out.

She tucked the business card into the waistband of her tutu and started walking. She looked down at her boots. There was a reason people didn’t rock stilettos in the wilderness—or even in the woodsy patches dotting Metro Denver. It was hard as hell to move, but it was too late to assign this stretch of the school property to one of her ninja-clad friends. Continuing her trek, she listened for the creek. It was early October, and while the water wouldn’t be raging like it did in the summer months, the unusually warm fall wouldn’t have dried things up quite yet. A slight burble and splash caught her attention, but the faint sound of a woman singing stopped her in her tracks and had her jaw hitting the ground.

“Sweet, so sweet, hello to my favorite treat.”
