They made out like a pair of sex maniacs.

“Do you see them?” Landon murmured against her lips.

“Yeah, one is watching us,” she replied as she licked his face, then knocked his hat clean off his head as she ravaged his perfect pop star hair. “Oh no,” she moaned.

“Oh no?” he echoed as he stuck his tongue in her ear.

“A security guard is coming this way,” she whispered, squeezing her eyes shut like a toddler. If she couldn’t see him, he couldn’t see her.

Landon froze with his tongue still lodged in her ear.

“Hey, buddy,” the security guard barked. “I need to speak with you.”

“Please, no donkeys,” she whispered to the universe.

Her pop star retracted his tongue. “What can I help you with, sir?” he asked, adjusting his glasses.

She opened her eyes, pissed, but not surprised that the toddler trick hadn’t worked. She glanced at the security guard and prayed Nevada didn’t have donkey racing.

The stalky guard held up a ball cap. “You dropped this. I wouldn’t want somebody to step on it.”

Her heartbeat slowed.

Was that it? Were they in the clear?

Landon accepted the cap and placed it on his head. “Thanks, man.”

The guard cocked his head to the side and gave Landon the once-over. “Anyone ever tell you that you look like Landon Paige?”

Crap!

She parted her lips, ready to regurgitate the Bartholomew ruse, when another guard waved to their curious bouncer.

“Spencer, come on,” he called. “We’ll cut them off before they get down from the balcony.”

Their hat retrieval helper nodded, then set off toward the stairwell.

They were safe. He hadn’t recognized them.

They sat, stock-still, until the three men disappeared into the stairwell.

Landon leaned in and rested his forehead against hers. “That was close.”

She giggled. “Way, way too close.”

“I guess there will be no donkey shenanigans for the heartthrob and the bonbon,” he said as they broke into a rolling bout of laughter.

The heartthrob and the bonbon.

She wasn’t about to get sappy, but that did have a nauseatingly cute ring to it.

The adrenaline receded, and she wrapped her arms around his neck. He kissed the tip of her nose and traced tiny circles on her back.

“No donkey duty for us,” he said as an easy grin bloomed on his beautiful lips.

“Thank God,” she offered, gazing into his eyes.

Sharing this collective relief felt as intimate as having him inside her—maybe even more so.
