“Look. There’s no easy way to say this, but I wanted to tell you face to face.” I shoved a hand through my hair, hating this kind of shit. “I want to put an end to what we’re doing.”

“I don’t think so,” she scoffed, putting her hand out to see the handiwork of bright yellow on her nails.

“Don’t make this harder than it has to be. We were sleeping together. That’s it. And out of respect for you, I’m ending it now rather than leaving you hanging. It’s over, Everleigh. I won’t be coming around to see you anymore, and I’d appreciate the same from you.”

Her brow furrowed at my tone. She studied me, trying to look for a weakness—for a sign of me joking. She found none, and her lip quivered. “You’re not kidding, are you?”

I shook my head. “No. I’m not. And it was bound to happen eventually. We agreed—”

“Is there someone else?” she demanded.

“No,” I lied. Although, I wasn’t lying if I had a hidden agenda. “I’ve had enough. That’s all. I want to nip it in the bud.”

“You’re lying to me,” she hissed with venom, taking a wobbly step toward me. “I know you, Donovan Darman. I know how you need to keep your dick wet and your wolf sated. You won’t finish things with me for nothing!”

“Well, I am. I wish you all the best, Everleigh.”

I turned my back to her, intending to walk away, but instinct had me turning around just in time to grab her wrists before her talons raked chunks out of my skin.

“You son of a bitch!” she screamed, trying to scratch my eyes out.

“Tone it down. And back off,” I growled, the wolf and alpha in me rising to the surface at her audacity. “Don’t play the victim. Otherwise, I’ll make your life a living hell, and you fucking know it. We fooled around. That’s it. I never promised you anything more. And you’ve been happy enough, running around with others—”

“I won’t,” she sobbed, pleading with me. Makeup and tears ran down her face. “I won’t run around with anyone else. Not anymore. I only want you, Donovan. I’ve just been waiting. Waiting for the mate magic to happen.”

“It won’t happen,” I said, calming as the guilt hit home. “I told you that. And you accepted it.”Eventually.

She yanked her wrists from my grip. “You won’t even give it a chance. You keep holding out for some two-bit whore when you know I’ll make you happy!”

I took a step closer, seeing for the first time the flickers of what Kyran had warned me about. “Have you been lying to me, Everleigh?” I demanded, my annoyance growing at the tears on her face.

“No,” she snapped. “Of course not!”

“Then where is all this coming from? You told me you were happy to do the dating thing, to keep it as just sex. Don’t come at me like I’ve crossed you, crying as if I promised you something when I didn’t.”

She went to say something but stopped, her tears stopping just as fast. They flashed with rage. But credit to her this time. She held it back, resolute, knowing me too well that her antics wouldn’t get her very far. She took a step back and crossed her arms over her chest, waiting. I said nothing. But then her eyes watered again. Only this time, she didn’t appreciate it. She staggered back toward the cabin.

“I’m sorry, Everleigh,” I whispered, not wanting to hurt her. But I would in the long run if I didn’t end it now.

“So am I,” she said weakly, her shoulders slumped as she disappeared back inside the cabin.
