“Your uncle is safe at the moment,” I told her honestly, “but the second Gideon gets hold of me or my location, your uncle will no longer be useful to him. And neither will you.”

Rage hit her then. I noticed it in the rigidity of her shoulders, her pupils, and the clenching of her jaw. “I’m not stupid. I figured that out myself, remember? But I planned to get my uncle out of town first. To leave everything behind and get out of his way.”

“He’s been after me for sixty years. Do you really think he’d risk his reputation and let you go?”

“Damn it,” she whispered. “You’re right.” Her hand tightened around mine. “This is all so stupid. All because my uncle doesn’t know when to say no at the tables.”

“I’m glad you came here. I’m glad you found me. Found us. Now I can help you, and I’ll make sure I take the bastard out one way or another like I should have done in the first place. I’ll see you safe, Savannah.”

“Thank you,” she whispered, and my skin prickled. A blossomed feeling fed its way through my body, one that comforted, easing everything within.

Repeating her words from before when I had thanked her, I replied, “Anytime.”
