The three of them left, and I watched Savannah go, making funny noises and hand animals as they walked away. Justin’s laughter and the way Savannah didn’t care how she looked when she played with him made me pine for a child of my own. With her.

“Oh man,” Harrison said to Kyran. “You’re right. He’s got it bad.”

“Told you.”

I reluctantly turned to them both, ignoring their jibes. “Max isn’t joining us until tomorrow, so how about a couple of light beers at the cabin. Maybe a pizza tonight?”

“Sounds good.”

“You know it’s a Friday,” Kyran said, distracted as we made plans.

“Yeah,” I drew out, “So?”

“Savannah and Grace are going into The Red Riding Hood on a Friday night.”

“And I repeat, so?”

“The young pups will see Savannah as fresh meat.”

“They already went out without us and survived, Kyran. I’m sure they’ll be fine.”

Kyran dragged his eyes away from the direction of where Savannah and Grace had left. “The mate magic might force you to rethink that, brother. You wait and see.”

“Mate magic?” Harrison said, interested in the conversation all of a sudden. “You and the bounty hunter?”

I nodded. “Yes. It’s engaged with her. But I’ve not claimed her yet. She thinks of our relationship in human terms. She won’t understand.”

“Don’t do that,” Harrison said, his solemn demeanor shifting. “Don’t think for her. Tell her everything, and let her base her decision on that. Don’t think you’ll always have tomorrow, because sometimes, tomorrow never comes.”

He walked back to his SUV, distracted, and I shared a glance with Kyran.

“He wears the weight,” I muttered, wishing happiness for my friend instead of the dark misery that cloaked him.

“He wears the guilt of the mate magic not coming for Jasmine. He thinks it’s his fault because he didn’t love her enough.”

“They weren’t meant for one another.” I sighed. “It’s not until you feel it do you realize how strong it is.”

“It’s soul to soul. You see them beyond layers, beyond the knowledge of the mind,” Kyran agreed, looking out onto the horizon.

“How would you know?”

He blinked and pushed away from the truck. “You hear things. Do you want a ride into town, or not?”

“You’re such a miserable bastard, lately. You know that right?” I climbed into his truck and he joined me.

“Yeah. And you can say that when you’re getting fucked and I’m not, so shut the hell up.”

“I am getting fucked.” I grinned.

“Fucked in the head,” he mumbled while waiting for Harrison to get settled in his car behind us, and then getting us on our way.
