Page 21 of Shake Up My Life

Running toward Brent’s car, my hand slips a couple times as I try to pull the driver’s door open and throw myself inside. I’m a ball of shaking nerves. He has a girlfriend, a very naked girlfriend. I’m shaking as I try to simultaneously put my foot on the brake and touch the ignition button at the same time.

Before I can get everything to work together so that I can get the hell out of here, the door is wrenched open. A strong hand wraps around my bicep, squeezing me roughly. I look over, my lips parted and my eyes wide as my heart races against my ribs. It pounds hard and fast, it feels like it’s going to fall out of my chest.

“You ain’t going nowhere, buttercup,” he announces as he starts to drag me out of the car.

I cry out, reaching for his hand and trying to push him off of me. It doesn’t work. His grip is stronger than I am. I try harder and harder, but again, I fail and find myself falling to the ground, my ass hitting the rock and dirthard.

“Give me your keys,” he demands, looming over the top of me, his palm outstretched.

Thankfully he’s not holding on to me anymore, but I would be a fool if I thought that I could run from him right now and get away. I look to the side, then slowly stand to my feet. Turning to the car before I reach inside silently, grabbing the keys out of the cup holder in the center console.

I don’t hand them to him though. I’m a bit more immature than that, I throw them at him. “This isn’t my car. I don’t know what your plans are, but this is Brent’s car. I’m just borrowing it for my real estate classes.”

I’ve made a mistake. I know it as soon as the words slip out of my mouth. As soon as they are past my lips, Riff’s eyes widen and he tilts his head to the side, his gorgeous, bearded face looking directly at me.

“You’re in culinary school,” he announces as if it’s a fact, and it was a fact, but it’s not anymore.

Shaking my head slowly, I shift my weight from side to side. “I’m not anymore. It was a stupid waste of time. I can at least have a professional career selling houses and will be able to provide for myself.”

“Tanner,” he says, his voice soft.

“Riff,” a woman’s voice shouts.

Looking over his shoulder, I close my eyes to avoid the pain of seeing this woman or allowing Riff to see my pain. She’s still naked. I take a step backward, but I have nowhere to go. He has my car keys. I want to shrivel up right here on the spot and disappear.
