Two sets of suspicious eyes greet us when we finally make our way downstairs.

“What were you two doing?” Colton is curious and perceptive. It’s hard to believe we’ll be able to keep our relationship a secret around him.

“Having a discussion about this week,” I inform him.

“Can we go back to the animal shelter,” Piper pleads.

“Only if you’re on your best behavior,” I tell her. “Who knows what habits you’ve picked up after a week of being spoiled rotten by your grandparents.”

Colton simply rolls his eyes in response. “Can we go,” he grumbles.

Hadley grabs a bag filled with everything we need to make s’mores, in addition to towels and blankets.

“Wait,” I say, stopping her before she walks out of the house. I grab one of my hoodies from a nearby hook and hand it to her. I lean in and whisper, “If I can’t have my arms around you while we’re on the beach tonight, then at least wear this.”

She takes it from me, setting the beach bag down next to her feet before tugging the hoodie down over her head. It’s too big for her but she looks up at me, her lashes fluttering, a smile on her lips.

“Are you guys gonna kiss?” The sweet sound of my daughter’s voice cuts through the moment. I turn my head to find Piper staring at us with a grin that fills her tiny face.

“You’ve been watching too many princess movies,” I tell her.

Hadley opens the door, no doubt hoping for a quick getaway, but not before I catch her smirk. What’s so amusing? She’s the one who wants to keep our relationship under the radar, but it seems I might have some allies backing my fight to be honest with the kids.

She and Colton hold hands as we make the journey to the beach, and I never thought I’d be jealous of my own son. I should be the one holding her hand. When Piper runs ahead and teases her brother into chasing her, Hadley calls after them, but I stop her.

“Let them run ahead,” I tell her, snagging her hand. She glances down at our entwined fingers before watching Colton and Piper play up ahead. “They won’t notice.”

“They do seem to have some very interesting ideas about us,” she mentions, the smirk returning to her lips.

“I told you they would be okay with us being together.”

We walk along the beach, searching for the perfect place to set up the bonfire. All along the shoreline, fires begin to pop up, their flames dotting the dusky evening like little twinkling beacons. I work quickly to get the fire started before returning to the house for chairs. There aren’t many homes in Seaside directly on the beach, but we’re lucky. It’s one of the many reasons why I refuse to sell the house despite the commute to Portland every week.

When I return, Hadley is standing close to the roaring fire, her arms wrapped around her body. I can hear Colton and Piper’s voices carrying from where they’re playing nearby with friends. It’s almost as if we’re alone, and it’s the perfect excuse I need to wrap my arms around Hadley.

“What are you doing,” she asks with a gasp, her hands gripping my forearms. She starts to pull away, but I draw her back against me.

“Exactly what I want.” I keep her in place, leaning forward to nip her earlobe with my teeth. “And tonight, baby, I’m going to do everything I’ve been dreaming about, like getting another taste of your pussy.”

She spins in my arms, which is a bold move considering her earlier hesitation. She snakes her arms around my neck, pops up onto her tiptoes and kisses me.

“I can’t wait—”

“I knew it!” We both tense and our heads turn at the sound of Colton’s voice. He’s standing close enough to see exactly what we did, and not too far behind him is Piper. “I knew she was your girlfriend!”

Before he gives us the chance to explain, Colton bolts into the darkness.
