Chapter Thirty-Five:
Tag, You’re Out
For once, I didn’trun. I didn’t drink or gamble, and I didn’t do anything weird. I went home and slept for almost an entire day, then woke up and headed to Mia’s to take Jago driving again. She may not have agreed to move with me, but she hadn’t broken up with me either, so I wasn’t going anywhere just yet.
I got an offer on the house during my temporary hibernation and instructed Jamie to turn it down, citing a dumb excuse that it wasn’t smart to accept the first one that came my way. He understood and even agreed with me, which I took as the first good sign I’d had in a while.
When we got back from driving, I asked if it was okay for me to wait there until Mia got home. I needed fun, needed to see her laugh, and I wanted to hang out with Rio if she’d let me. No one had a problem with me staying, so I ordered dinner for everyone and laid on the couch that smelled like cinnamon and home like a big sad idiot, and I waited.
When she walked in the house, I saw her entire face light up at the sight of me. “I always love seeing that space car in the front when I get off work.”
She walked right over and plopped on top of me, kissing along my neck and face like she hadn’t seen me in weeks, and the older boys gagged and blocked their eyes.
Normally, I’d feel bad about it — but not today. Today, I needed to know she still felt like this. “Sorry I wasn’t answering, I slept for like twenty-two hours or some shit.”
“Are you rested now?” she laid her head down on my chest and stayed there like the positioning wasn’t awkward.
“Feeling much better, yeah.” I kissed the top of her head and shot Valentino an apologetic smile. “How are you? Ed still giving you a hard time?”
“No. He’s all bark no bite. Did you leave so you wouldn’t punch him in the face?”
I shook my head a little bit. “Nah, I knew you could handle him and figured I was just in the way. I left cause I needed some air,” I said honestly. “Then I needed sleep, and then I needed you.”
“Well, you got everything you needed.” She leaned in to kiss my jaw and whispered in my ear, “Room, two minutes,” then got up and disappeared up the stairs.
Oh, shit. I shifted a little and crossed my legs, then smiled with pursed lips at the boys. “So ... hi. You guys wanna go play laser tag or paintball or something in like an hour? Did you get your homework done?”
All of their faces lit up in excitement. “Yes!” a few of them said in unison.
Jago chuckled. “You better go talk to Titi. She was a grouch last night.”
“No she wasn’t,” Rio argued, glaring at him like he’d punch him if he talked badly about his mom.
“Calm down, Ri. I didn’t mean it in a bad way, you wouldn’t understand, you’re too little. Titi is just happier when Ollie is around. That’s all it is.”
Rio seemed to agree, but all it did was send a throb of something a lot like pain through my chest.
“Well go clean up to make your mom and Titi’s lives easier and then get dressed.” I stood and ducked out of the room, sneaking quietly to Mia’s. “Kinda promised the kids laser tag.”
“Did you?” Mia backed me against the door and started kissing on my neck. “For tonight?” She kept going, down my chest until she lifted my shirt and disappeared underneath it.
“I ... oh, god.” My head hit the door as I felt those lips all over my skin. “Yeah. Kinda panicked, they were all staring at me. I’m not good under pressure, baby.”
I felt her huff against my skin. “Guess I better hurry.”
Mia was on her knees and tugging on my jeans in a second, making me clamp a hand over my own mouth to shut myself up. I certainly wasn’t going to argue with her if she was offering.
She had me coming down her throat so fast it would have been embarrassing if we hadn’t already discussed the fact that this was a quickie, but when she didn’t allow me to return the favor, I was instantly grumpy.
