“That’s way less cool.”

“You could probably summon chips from the kitchen without getting up.”

“Okay, I’m warming up to the idea.”

“It says that they may be gifted, definitely not a sure thing.”

“Alright, stop stalling. What do your colors mean?” Ruby nods at the book clutched tightly in my hands.

I flip to the next page, because while I see an entry for the individual colors, it doesn’t talk about the two morphing into each other. There’s another note at the bottom of the next page. My eyes fly over the words as I feel absurdly nervous. Why? This doesn’t matter. Whatever this book says doesn’t change anything about who I am. It’s just confirming what already exists.

I clear my throat. “Some magic cannot be labeled with one color. In the instance when more than one color appears, it is always a complimentary magic. See the following page for additional information.” I huff and flip the page, quickly scanning the words.

“There.” Ruby spots it first and points to a section with the heading Black and White.

“These two magics are intertwined because they deal with life and death magic.” My voice stutters out as I stare at the word death like it’s going to rise up from the page and strangle me. When I don’t start reading again fast enough for Ruby, she tugs the book out of my hands and presses me into the chair.

“White represents life magic, which allows those in possession of this power to heal, and to grow flora. It can also steal life from any living thing. Black is the color of death magic.”

I suck in a breath, and Ruby shoots me a worried glance. “It just sounds bad because there’s such a negative connotation to the word death.”

Neither Miri nor I respond, and Ruby continues.

“Those with death magic can control the souls of others, can speak to the dead, and also resurrect the departed.” Ruby frowns down at the book. I take back my earlier thoughts about knowing what my magic means, not changing me. I feel tainted.

“So that’s not exactly the up-side, down-side list I was thinking it would be. Still, you could become a medium and travel with a carnival. Read people’s palms and stuff.”

I let go of a reluctant laugh. Leave it to Ruby. “I don’t think the carnie life is for me, but good to know I have options.”

“So… that was intense, but also, high five because it totally worked.” Miri holds up her hand, and then gives herself a high five when Ruby and I leave her hanging.

“Now that we know, what do we do with this information?”
