“More like vendors sell their handmade soaps, jewelry, and pastries, while people drink on the streets and dance to live music,” Lena offers up dryly.

“Well, that’s slightly less bloody than I was hoping for, but I can adjust my expectations.” He grins at Lena, his smile huge and bright.

I have no doubt he has women falling at his feet with the crook of his little finger on a regular basis, but Lena isn’t so easily charmed. There is something off about him, and I’m not the only one to sense it. Lena’s hand lands on my thigh beneath the table and I stiffen as I try not to give away my surprise. I rest my hand next to hers and hook her pinkie with mine, making her smile a little.

Colton must interpret that smile as being for him. He smirks back at her like she’s a big fish he’s hooked.

“I had the pleasure of meeting your father yesterday. We had a charming conversation.” He’s talking to Lena like she’s the only person in the room. There’s a glint in his eye and I can't figure out if he knows what a sore subject this is, or if he genuinely thinks this will endear him to her. What I do know is that there is nothing charming about Scott Marsten.

Most of Wild Haven know that Rhys and Lena don’t speak to their father. He might be our sheriff, but he’s not a beloved public figure. He’s a corrupt piece of shit who only sits on that seat of power because Anthony fucking Hatcher puts him there.

“He had so much to say about you.”
