I knew this was coming, but it doesn’t make it any better. I don’t want a lecture, especially not from Archer.

“I needed to get out of my apartment.” I scrub a hand over my face. “I couldn’t sleep.” I open my eyes and turn my head, finding Archer’s stormy gray eyes already on my face.

“Call me instead next time. I’ll come over. Or I’ll go with you.”

The way he’s looking at me makes my chest ache. Heat simmers low in my belly, and I want to lean in and close the distance between us, to feel his lips against mine. I know I’m imagining the glimmer of desire in his gaze, but I want it to be real so badly.

Archer’s gaze drops to my mouth and his eyes go all half-lidded. My heart stammers in my chest, and warmth spreads up my neck and over my cheeks.

“I should go shower.” I’m such a chicken. Here I am, dying for him to kiss me, but I want to run from these new emotions I’m seeing on his face. They can’t be real, can they?

Archer takes a step back. His eyes dart from my mouth to my eyes and back again. My heartbeat is thrumming like a hummingbird, and I press my hand to my chest like that might calm it. Archer follows the movement, his stare landing on my chest as he sucks in his full bottom lip.

Someone calls out a hello to Archer from across the street, breaking into our bubble. With rapid blinks, Archer straightens and turns to face forward. The chill of the morning air bites at my skin, waking me from whatever fantasy I just let play out.

For a second, I could have sworn there was need burning in Archer’s eyes, but that’s just wishful thinking on my part. Climbing out of the ATV, I turn and wave goodbye, finding Archer’s steady gaze locked on me, his face serious and determined.

“I’ll be here to walk you to work at quarter to.”

I can feel Archer’s eyes tracking me as I walk up the stairs and let myself into my apartment. I sag against the door as soon as I get it shut. Nothing about this morning turned out as expected.
