When his eyes drift open, they’re sleepy and so exposed it makes my heart crack open. It’s like looking into the depths of his soul.

“I think I did something.” Even his voice is husky as it slides over my skin like a caress.

I pull my hand back and we both lean forward to look down at the paper. Our foreheads nearly brush together, and I momentarily get lost in the heady warmth of his scent. He smells so incredible that my mouth actually waters. The label is forgotten in Rhys’s hand as we stare at each other, the connection sparking and sizzling between us.

A bark of laughter from inside the house yanks me back to reality. Ripping me away from the violet depths of Rhys’s eyes and back into the garden of Miri’s house. My eyes drop and a puff of breath leaves my lips.

“You did it.”

“What?” Rhys’s brows bunch in confusion before his eyes lower to his hand. “Holy shit.”

He didn’t just turn the paper purple, he changed the label in other subtle ways. The writing is a shimmering silver where before it was white, and the blue paper has turned into a vibrant purple.

“You’ll be glamoring a whole person soon.”

“Will you keep showing me?”

“Absolutely,” I say, calling back the words he said to me earlier. “But only if you help me draw on Ruby’s face when she passes out later. I’m told it’s another rite of passage. Ruby kept saying ‘beware of the sleeping dong’ on the way over here.”

Laughter breaks free from Rhys as he tips his head back. He looks so young and unburdened. I ache to see him this way all the time.

“I’ve got a Sharpie in my pocket.”

I don’t know what that means, but I grin back at him.
